Principal Site Reliability Engineer, Network

Fastly is not a traditional networking company. Our software platform drives our network and we are constantly pushing the boundaries of our platform to improve efficiencies and optimize resources. We’re trusted by our customers to respond to the unknowns of the internet while delivering their most critical applications and events.

Fastly’s TechOps team is responsible for building and operating the infrastructure that powers the Fastly Edge Cloud Platform. We oversee an extensive global network that spans 6 continents with over 252 TBps of connected capacity.

We’re looking for a talented Principal Site Reliability Engineer to join our team to help us step into the next stage of operations here at Fastly. We’re not just looking for someone comfortable with operating existing large scale infrastructure but a technical leader that can advocate for the future of the platform and help build a more resilient network.

What you’ll do

+ Design, build, and maintain the software and network infrastructure that powers Fastly’s Edge Cloud Platform.

+ Help Fastly maintain and iterate SRE best practices.

+ Provide mentorship and technical leadership to other members of the organization.

+ Automate, automate, AUTOMATE! (network and system configuration, capacity & performance management, and traffic engineering).

+ Search for areas of opportunity and partner with engineering teams in the scoping and prioritization of their roadmaps and software solutions.

+ Develop innovative ways of monitoring performance of the platform, with focus on the experience of end users on the Internet. Catch and remediate potential issues before they develop into impacting events.

+ Participate in on-call rotation for critical after-hours incidents.

What we’re looking for

+ You have a minimum of 7 years of experience as an SRE, with at least 5 of those working on large scale distributed networks including capacity monitoring and planning.

+ You absolutely must have deep experience in the protocols and practices that make up the fabric of the global internet, including IP, BGP, Anycast, and DNS in order to be successful in this role.

+ Advanced Linux knowledge and the ability to dive deep into the stack.

+ Strong development & automation experience, preferably in Python or Go.

+ Experience with bootstrapping new engineering initiatives. Familiarity with taking an idea from inception to implementation.

+ Experience of DevOps practices;CI / CD pipelines (ie. Git, Jenkins, Ansible), containerization (kubernetes, docker)

Bonus Points

+ Experience across cloud environments (i.e., GCP, AWS or Azure)

Fastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.

This position may require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

Salary

The estimated salary range for this position is $195,720 to $244,640.

Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.
