Description:
Working jointly with the marketing and communications teams of the Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications, the Senior Copy Editor and Writer is responsible for curating UIC's weekly newsletter (UIC Today) along with providing strategic leadership regarding copy editing, writing and editorial support to inform, inspire and engage the brand and reputation of the University of Illinois Chicago.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Storytelling and Content Strategy, the Senior Copy Editor and Writer is a savvy communicator and steeped marketer who is highly detailed-oriented and gets just as energized by the proper use of the Oxford comma and AP style as writing-sometimes in 280 characters or less-marketing copy reinforcing UIC's mission, values and community. The Senior Copy Editor and Writer values a team of teams approach by supporting a collaborative environment to curate a content strategy anchored in brand voice, clarity and accuracy. The role also values process and will curate an integrated team workflow, system of editing and proofing. The Senior Copy Editor and Writer values and amplifies an inclusive learning environment to curate editorial and marketing copy best practices and lead workshops internally and externally with 150-plus key communicators across campus and other partners.
Qualifications:
Serve as deputy copy chief to curate university newsletter and other daily/weekly content.
Serve as the lead to review, revise, rewrite and edit copy, including headlines, subheads, captions, etc. (internal and external) for accuracy, quality, voice, spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax to achieve accurate and consistent editing/branding for marketing and communication needs.
Nimble ability to adapt content for various multimedia channels.
Lead and manage a growing team, includes the Associate Copy Editor and Writer, to plan and curate advertising, marketing and editorial content and proofread submissions for grammatical and style errors. Collaborates with content strategy and marketing teams to ensure copy is consistent with brand standards and the university's mission and values.
Work with team members to ensure deadlines are being met and projects stay focused and on task.
Write and/or edit a variety of material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content and emphasis.
Write, edits and review copy in multiple forms, including email, landing pages, newsletters, web and social media, videos, and content styles, including blurbs, lede, headlines and strap lines.
Possess a knack for cutting through complicated text and jargon and simplifying and connecting to brand voice, impact and different modes of communications.
Lead creation and execution of marketing campaigns for targeted audience groups informed by a deep understanding of reputational strategy.
