Position Summary
Facilitate equal access to post-secondary education for students with disabilities and other academic needs. Provide individualized academic support to students with disabilities and other academic needs. Coordinate assistive technology services for the department. Provide outreach and act as a liaison for Access and Disability Services to both internal and external constituents.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Determine and facilitate implementation of appropriate accommodations for students consistent with their documentation during an initial intake appointment and throughout the time the students attend MCC
Ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008
Determine appropriate academic accommodations and services and discuss students' academic performance and use of services as needed; assist students with academic concerns directly related to disabilities
Tutor, mentor and coach students in the development of their academic, thinking, and learning skills
Tutor, mentor, and coach students in individualized and group sessions on how to develop their study skills such as effective reading, notetaking, organization, and time management strategies
Coordinate the acquisition and conversion of textbooks and course materials into alternative formats
Maintain assistive technology inventory, recommend the purchase of appropriate equipment and software, and arrange for or provide training of staff and students on the use of such technology in collaboration with Information Technology Department and external vendors
Maintain confidentiality of student information and records
Maintain timely data tracking, documentation and reporting of service
Oversee and customize digital database containing confidential ADS student profiles, disability documentation, and related forms
Serve as liaison to high schools, social service agencies, and appropriate MCC staff to recruit and retain students with disabilities
Provide referral information to students with disabilities regarding available campus and community services
Assist students with disabilities in developing self-advocacy skills
Serve as an advocate for students with disabilities and other students who work with ADS to ensure equal access
Assist in the hiring, coordination, scheduling and monitoring of student support and accommodation services, such as tutoring, accessibility aides, sign language interpreting, captioning, and Braille
Communicate regularly with faculty and staff regarding student accommodations, classroom behavior and academic progress
Provide disability awareness and professional development training for faculty, staff, and administration
Work with the Division of Student Affairs to foster an increased engagement of students with disabilities in student life activities and events
Act as a liaison with other academic and student affairs departments and divisions related to job responsibilities and departmental functions
Market and promote Access and Disability Services
Assist with planning and conducting orientation activities for students new to ADS
Work collaboratively with others (e.g. colleagues, stakeholders, vendors) to accomplish functions and responsibilities
Assist with planning and conducting orientation activities for students new to ADS
Work with other campus academic and student support services departments in appropriate referrals for students' needs
Participate in relevant training and professional development services to effectively support student academic success and retention
Serve on relevant College committees
Participate in external disability and accommodation organizations to identify best practices that might be applicable to MCC
Assume additional duties as assigned by the Director of ADS
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in Special Education, Counseling, Education, or related field
Three years' teaching, disabilities service, or tutoring experience in higher education or other related experience in education or social services
