JOB SUMMARY


Under the administrative supervision of the Pediatric Department Chair and collaboration with Attending Physician, provides exceptional care to a diverse patient population with complex, acute, critical, and chronic health conditions. The Physician Assistant will practice in the Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, the step-down unit, and the general Pediatric service settings whereby the patients require complex monitoring and therapies, high intensity intervention, or continuous vigilance within the range of high acuity care. Performs duties within the legal guidelines of the Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS) policies.

Typical Duties
*Provides independent care for a population of patients from neonate to age 18 as delineated in the collaborative agreement.
*Provides cross coverage in the Neonatal ICU, the Pediatric ICU, the step-down unit and general Pediatric services.
*Provides independent pediatric/neonatal physical assessment; obtains a comprehensive health history and physical; documents progress notes; prepares discharge summaries as required.
*Identifies significant health and medical risk factors and documents in the EMR.
*Orders and interprets diagnostic tests to differentiate between normal variations and abnormal deviations; refers patients with abnormal results to consult with aphysician.
*In collaboration with the physician, develops a treatment plan.
*Prescribes and dispenses of legal drugs and controlled substances asdelegated.
*Acts as a liaison and collaborates with physicians, nursing staff, andhouse staff regularly to ensure quality and safe patient care.
*Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as delegated; central vascular access, lumbar punctures, endotracheal intubation chest tube replacement, peripheral vascular access, conscious sedation, intraosseous access, management of Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV) and Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (IPPV).

 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Valid as a Certified Physician Assistant
 by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or
 the ability to obtain certification two (2) weeks prior to starting
 employment
Licensed as a Physician Assistant in the
 State of Illinois or the ability to obtain Illinois state license two (2)
 weeks prior to starting employment
Valid Illinois Controlled Substances
 License (ILCS) or the ability to obtain Illinois license two (2) weeks
 prior to starting employment
Valid licensure with the Federal DEA or
 the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment
Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
 certification

Preferred
Qualifications

Pediatric Advanced Life
Support (PALS) certification

Neonatal Advanced Life
Support (NALS) certification

Knowledge,

Thorough knowledge of Physician
 Assistant practices and principles and the ability to apply them in a
 clinical setting.
Knowledge of proper hand hygiene and
 hand washing techniques
Knowledge of infectious control policies
 and procedures
Excellent Physician Assistant clinical

Knowledge and skill to perform
 mathematical accuracy in measuring and dispensing medication
Excellent verbal and written
