Metra's Law Department's core mission is to provide legal guidance and support to the Board of Directors, the executive team and every other department in the organization. The department focuses on preventing legal issues at every feasible level, as well as defending the agency's position if issues arise. The Law Department supports Metra's transportation mission by guiding the agency through the myriad of restrictions and mandates of federal, state and local statutes, regulations, and ordinances. The Department is comprised of three basic divisions: General Corporate/Ethics, Litigation and Risk Management, and Real Estate and Grants. The Litigation Section of the Law Department handles a variety of matters on behalf of Metra and its employees in the state and federal courts including common law tort liability claims, FELA,OSHA claims and other work place claims, contract and lease disputes and civil rights claims.
Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, the Attorney 3 is a senior level position that will provide expert legal services for corporate transactional or litigation functions within the Law department and may be assigned core duties that involve complex compliance, contracts, employment, litigation, real estate, risk, or general corporate matters; accurate, concise, and practical legal advice to the executive team; and manage a variety of cases on behalf of the agency and its employees in state and federal courts including common law tort liability, civil rights, Federal Employers' Liabilities Act (FELA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), contract, and lease dispute claims.
This position will require some specialized experience, to be identified in the position posting, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the assigned area.
The primary duties include: Manage assigned cases including pre-trial and client preparation, interviews and witness presentation, and expert selection; draft discovery and take depositions; draft motions, briefs, and legal memoranda; ensure legal responses are compliant with statutory guidelines; and report on case status including strategy, risk assessment, and appeal analysis. Attend all court hearings, depositions, meetings, conferences, and other required events associated with assigned cases, and represent the agency in court. Draft, prepare, and review public sector contracts, including intellectual property, licensing agreements and negotiations; ensure all relevant facts and legal considerations are assembled, assessed and accurate before contracts are presented for execution. Work collaboratively with agency teams responsible for products and services requiring contracts or other documentation; review processes for individual procurements to ensure compliance with established rules and regulations; and evaluate and advise on appropriate legal courses of action. Participate in long-term projects, settlement negotiations, and closings on real estate transactions; and provide counsel, risk assessment, and strategy recommendations. Coordinate team's day-to-day activities, assign tasks/projects and monitor performance, and provide guidance and training, but is not a supervisor. Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Must possess a Juris Doctorate degree.
