Job Description

The Nanoscience and Technology Division/Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) at Argonne National Laboratory has an available Cleanroom Coordinator position within the Nanofabrication and Devices Group (NFD), funded through the CNM program. The CNM is a DOE Office of Science user facility that provides researchers from across the globe with world-class expertise and instrumentation for multidisciplinary nanoscience and nanotechnology research.

The Cleanroom Coordinator will serve as a central person supporting overall operations of the cleanroom. The successful candidate will support a dynamic team of scientists and engineers with diverse expertise in synthesis, processing of materials and nanofabrication as well as users from universities, national labs and industry. The candidate will primarily work in the cleanroom and be responsible for the smooth operation of the cleanroom by working closely with the NFD group leader and the group members, CNM management, operations staff and CNM safety. The cleanroom has ~18,000 sq. feet of class 1000 cleanroom space consisting of the CNM and Argonne cleanrooms (ACR) and houses state-of-the-art equipment with around 400 users accessing the cleanroom/year.

Roles and responsibilities:

+ Provide cleanroom orientation including safety orientation, gowning and de-gowning procedures, and general operation principals

+ Work with NFD staff members in writing standard operating procedures for equipment and processes in the cleanroom and keeping the documents current

+ Work with cleanroom users and ensure they are getting the support to work safely in the cleanroom

+ Be a member of the Hazardous Gas Response Team (HGRT) team including Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response standard (HAZWOPER) training and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) use

+ Become a qualified electrical worker

+ Candidate will assist the tool custodian with installation, service and maintenance tasks

+ General cleanroom housekeeping on a daily basis including ordering and stocking of consumables and chemicals

+ Work with the NFD group leader, NFD staff members and CNM safety in making sure that all safety procedures are followed for the safe operation of the cleanroom

+ Review ACR proposals, work with ACR project PIs on facilitating the smooth operation of the cleanroom

+ Participate actively in writing equipment proposals to acquire new tools for the cleanroom

+ Help cleanroom staff with cleanroom outreach activities (tours, discussions, etc.)

+ Coordinate facilities modifications, etc. by working with appropriate groups (such as facilities/operations, administration)

+ Coordinate efforts to resolve facilities problems with equipment (pumps, chillers, gas supply, spinners, hotplates, etc.)

+ Schedule periodic maintenance (Chillers, pumps, etc.)

+ Coordinate supplies and keep track of inventory to ensure continuous operation (LN2 refill, process gases, etc.)

+ Responsible for Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA) within the cleanroom and disposing of waste in a timely manner

+ Provide regular updates/changes about cleanroom operations to NFD group, staff/users and user office

The duties and responsibilities of cleanroom coordinator may change based on changing needs for cleanroom operations.

Position Requirements

+ A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, or a related field, coupled with substantial practical experience in a micro/nano fabrication cleanroom, is essential.

+ Exceptional communication skills and a proven ability to collaborate effectively within a diverse team are imperative.

+ Additional consideration will be given to candidates with prior experience in the semiconductor industry or in a university/national lab cleanroom within a team-oriented setting.

+ Any previous experience working with end-users will be regarded as an advantageous qualification.

+ Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Position is open to the following levels:

RD1: Bachelors and 0+ years, Masters and 0+ years, or equivalent

RD2: Bachelors and 5+ years, Masters and 3+ years, or a PhD, or equivalent

While a Ph.D. is not required qualification, it will be taken into consideration.
