Metra's Law Department is led by the General Counsel who reports directly to the CEO and the Metra Board of Directors. The department provides legal guidance and support to the Board of Directors, the executive team and every department in the organization. The department is comprised of three areas: General Corporate/Ethics, Litigation and Risk Management and Real Estate and Grants. The department focuses on preventing legal issues at every feasible level and defending the agency's position if issues arise. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, the Paralegal will provide administrative support and complex paralegal services to department attorneys; may be assigned tasks specific to litigation, corporate law, or risk management; maintain legal records, documents, and files; conduct research; collect information; compose routine legal correspondence; respond to requests for information; and serve as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Officer and Open Meetings Act (OMA) Officer. This position will require specialized, technical, or functional expertise within one or more of the assigned areas. The Primary Duties include: Assist attorneys in drafting and maintaining oral and written correspondence between Metra internal departments and external parties. Travel within the service area for the purpose of retrieving and preserving documents necessary for discovery and trial. (Breakdown per group) Coordinate team's day-to-day activities, assign tasks/projects and monitor performance, and provide guidance and training, but is not a supervisor. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. Litigation Paralegal Draft, abstract complex transcripts and briefings, and analyze legal documents; may draft discovery and investigate facts including, interrogatories and requests to produce, and date stamp, documents; assist with arbitration hearings; interview witnesses; and summarize depositions and medical records. Prepare and file pleadings and affidavits; deliver materials to local courts; attend court and docket appearances; and handle court follow-ups. Schedule all depositions, meetings, site inspections, court reporters, witnesses, doctors, experts, and all relevant parties; and apprise attorneys and all relevant parties of all meetings, depositions, and pertinent deadlines. Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate. Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration. An Associate degree in Paralegal Studies or a Paralegal Certificate from an ABA accredited institution. In addition to #1, must have five (5) years of experience as a paralegal conducting research, preparing documents, scheduling meetings, maintaining files, and drafting responses to requests and appeals. Considerable knowledge of court procedures, filing requirements, pleading rules, and the subpoena process. Considerable knowledge of legal terminology and practices. Considerable knowledge of recordkeeping, case management, report preparation, and research techniques and methodologies. Familiar with local, state, and federal regulations related to railroad transportation. Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint); and litigation-related computer applications and databases. Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate legal subject matter in a professional manner with employees at all levels of the agency, external organizations, and the general public. Excellent organizational, administrative, analytical, and time management skills. Ability to interpret and apply specific laws and ordinances. Ability to perform legal research, draft legal documents, and summarize complex documents and transcripts.
