Overview

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

Responsibilities

The Distributed Systems Group is seeking a PhD intern to support research activities focused on grid-forming control strategies for inverter-based resources (IBRs) and the simulation of power grids with a substantial integration of IBRs. The candidate will collaborate with PNNL researchers to develop new control strategies for IBRs and assess their impact on system-wide oscillations. Ideally, the successful candidate will have a background in IBRs dynamics modeling and simulation.

Key responsibilities of the PhD Intern include but aren’t limited to; Collaborating effectively within a team and contributing to the assigned objectives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

+ Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.

+ Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Master’s and/or Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (with a focus on Power and Energy systems), or Computer Science.

+ Familiar with Inverter Modeling and Control.

+ Power Grid Modeling and Simulation.

+ Familiarity with PSSE, Simulink, or other such tools.

+ Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

+ Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher preferred.
