Overview

The High-Performance Computing (HPC) Group at PNNL seeks a Ph.D. student intern researcher with a background and interest in building the next generation of HPC systems and workflows. Our ideal candidate will have a drive to contribute to world-leading research, gain experience and an understanding of working at a DOE national laboratory, and contribute to solutions to complex multi-disciplinary projects. We are looking for candidates that could contribute to projects within our ongoing portfolio, covering topics including performance modeling and characterization; large-scale scientific computing; distributed computing incorporating edge, cloud, and HPC resources; energy efficient computing; and generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). The candidate will collaborate closely with laboratory personnel and as part of a team in developing leading research and will engage with computing and domain experts and researchers at collaborating national laboratories, universities, and industry partners. Specific topics of interest include:

+ Novel explorations of continuum and distributed computing for emerging scientific workflows, including but not limited to novel methods for performance and workload characterization, modeling of power and energy efficiency, and models and diagnostic insights from generative AI tools

+ Memory-centric measurement, analysis, and modeling to understand and improve data access patterns, re-locate or re-compose tasks or data to improve locality, and inform hardware-software codesign for novel memory systems

Responsibilities

+ Working closely with researchers within the High-Performance Computing group to help shape future computing systems and platforms with mission impact

+ Participating in technical discussions with project team and collaborators

+ Contributing to publications and presentations to be submitted to peer-reviewed venues

+ Presentation of research results to project team

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

+ Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.

+ Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
