Job Description

Nursery and Greenhouse Workers will work at a nursery that has both outdoor and indoor/greenhouse facilities. They can one one or any combination of the following tasks: Harvest plants, and transplant or pot and label them; Operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, and self-propelled machinery to plow, harrow and fertilize soil, or to plant, cultivate, spray and harvest crops; Set up and operate irrigation equipment; Harvest fruits and vegetables by hand; Clean work areas, and maintain grounds and landscaping; Sell and deliver plants and flowers to customers; Identify plants, pests, and weeds to determine the selection and application of fertilizers; Regulate greenhouse conditions, and indoor and outdoor irrigation systems; Cut, roll, and stack sod; Feel plants' leaves and note their coloring to detect the presence of insects or disease; Provide information and advice to the public regarding the selection, purchase, and care of products; Maintain and repair irrigation and climate control systems; Dig, cut, and transplant seedlings, cuttings, trees, and shrubs; Maintain inventory, ordering materials as required; Record information about plants and plant growth; Dig, rake, and screen soil, filling cold frames and hot beds in preparation for planting; Inspect plants and bud ties to assess quality; Move containerized shrubs, plants, and trees, using wheelbarrows or tractors; Tie and bunch flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees, wrap their roots, and pack them into boxes to fill orders; Load agricultural products into trucks, and drive trucks to market or storage facilities; Haul and spread topsoil, fertilizer, peat moss, and other materials to condition soil, using wheelbarrows or carts and shovels; and Plant, spray, weed, fertilize, water, and prune plants, shrubs, and trees, using gardening tools. In the first months of the job, workers will be working at two different locations--the main worksite location and a second location located 40 minutes away but in Wisconsin. At the Wisconsin location, workers will be stripping plants, trees, and shrubs down to roots and bulbs and getting them ready to transport to a the main Illinois location. At the Illinois location, they will be preparing the location to receive the new plants, shrubs, and tree. Once transferred, the new greens will be replanted and cared for at the Illinois location. Near the end of the work period, workers will prepare the plants, trees, and shrubs for the dormant, winter season.Some OT and weekends may be required. Must be able to lift 70 lbs. consistently on a daily basis. Hours may vary based on weather. Employer will provide daily transportation, free of charge, from the Illinois worksite and housing location, to the Wisconsin location (which is about a 40 minute drive away) on the days that they go there to work and they will be returned to the Illinois housing/worksite location at the end of the day. Workers will be paid a Wisconsin hourly rate on those days, but are not required to live in a different location to perform the duties of the position. May also install plaints, trees, and shrubs at various unanticipated worksites within normal commute distance. Employer will provide all transportation free of charge.
