Caterpillar, the largest Construction Equipment manufacturer in the World, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Design Engineer to be part of our engineering team in Peoria, IL.

The role will direct and participate in the design and development of new product concepts and complex engineering projects for release to production in a manner to ensure products provide superior performance, durability, quality, and serviceability. Position will work both as an individual contributor and as part of a project team on Caterpillar Earthmoving equipment such as, but not limited to Wheel Loaders, Track-type Tractors, Motor Graders, Compactors, Pavers, Cold Planers, and Rotary Mixers.

What You Will Do:

+ Design new products, processes, components, and/or systems to meet customer requirements and the capabilities of process partners.

+ Continually learn and stay abreast of innovative and emerging technologies such as machine learning, adaptive & autonomous controls, electrification, predictive maintenance

+ Lead projects addressing quality concerns and improve support of the product in the field.

+ Manage product changes with multiple functional areas for seamless introduction into production.

+ Work with regulatory and validation experts to design components and systems to meet certification requirements such as CE, CSA, and UL.

+ Engage manufacturing and suppliers to optimize designs for cost, quality, and assembly.

+ Provide technical guidance regarding validation testing and analysis.

+ Communicate results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units.

+ Complete projects on time and on cost.

+ Acknowledge and navigate trade-offs between time, resources and quality.

What You Have (Basic Qualifications):

Degree requirement : Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited university.

Analytical Thinking : Ability to identify critical gaps, next actions, and act to resolve issues with minimal oversight. An emphasis on initiative and strong technical insight.

Technical Excellence: Candidate must have strong analytical skills and have the ability to use various design software. Incumbent will develop and provide solutions for significant technical issues related to quality, velocity, and cost objectives.

Product Design and Development: Extensive knowledge of machine or system design and manufacturing, ability to understand the design process and standards.

Examples May Include:

+ Mechanical design of heavy mobile equipment and the various sub-systems they are comprised of – such as structures, hydraulics, electrical, engine integration & cooling, operator environments, non-metallic component design, powertrain, etc.

+ Virtual validation using tools such as finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), Discrete Element Modeling (DEM), Matlab, Python

+ Technology growth areas such as autonomy, connectivity, electrification, robotics, vision and perception systems, machine learning

Top Candidate Will Have:

+ Computer-Aided Design & Engineering : Experience with one or more of the following systems: Power BI, Tableau, Dewesoft, EDAQ, Creo 3D modeling or Creo Simulate (FEA), MATLAB, Python. Candidate must be able to find and review discrepancies and inconsistencies with systems and take steps to help resolve complex situations.

+ Effective Communication: Ability to communicate, collaborate, and build trust across a wide and diverse range of people – customers, dealers, product specialists, internal partners, suppliers, technicians, engineers, and leadership team .

+ Managing Multiple Priorities: Ability to learn and leverage Continues Process Improvement (CPI) strategies across the enterprise. Candidate will have the ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities.
