Postdoctoral Appointee - Solid State Lithium Metal Battery

at Argonne National Laboratory in Springfield, Illinois, United States

Job Description

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to mainly conduct research to develop high-energy and long-life all-solid-state lithium metal batteries using sulfur cathode or layered oxide cathode under the guidance of a supervisor (Dr. Guiliang Xu). The project mainly involves lithium metal protection through design of new solid-state electrolytes or solid-solid interface to achieve long cycle life and fast-charging performance. The candidate will also conduct novel characterization on the developed battery materials using synchrotron X-ray probes and surface-sensitive techniques to provide mechanistic understanding behind the performance.

The candidate should be able to analyze data, prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, present papers at scientific meetings, and prepare reports and presentations/papers for group meetings.

Position Requirements

+ Successful candidate will have level of knowledge, which is typically achieved through a formal education in Chemistry, chemical/mechanical engineering, materials science and other related at the Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience

+ Considerable skill in the synthesis of solid-state electrolytes for energy-storage application, in particularly sulfide-based

+ Considerable knowledge in the experience of interface engineering (e.g. surface coating) to suppress lithium dendrite formation

+ Hands-on experience with fabrication and testing of all-solid-state cells

+ Deep understanding of electrochemistry, able to conduct the cyclic voltammetry, EIS, and galvanostatic test

+ Knowledge of synchrotron-based X-ray techniques (such as x-ray diffraction and spectroscopy) for in situ studies of Materials/Interfacial chemistry during battery cycling

+ Considerable knowledge of processing and analyzing results

+ Strong oral and written communication skills and good record of publication and external recognition in relevant areas

+ Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork
