Assistant Chemical Engineer

Job Description

The Employee will be part of an R&D team conducting research supporting the development of advanced molten salt technologies applicable to molten salt reactors (MSRs), nuclear fuel reprocessing, electrometallurgy, and concentrated solar power (CSP) systems. With mentoring, the candidate will assist with the design, execution, and analysis of experiments. The employee will contribute to discovery and technological advances related to molten salt technologies. The research will involve the development of process equipment and process monitoring tools for high-temperature molten salt systems. Practical experimental skills in chemistry, expertise with instrumentation, and experience working with high-temperature or hazardous materials are desirable.

The activities associated with this position include:

+ Design, assembly, and operation of lab-scale and engineering-scale process equipment

+ Development of flow sheets and process diagrams for chemical and electrochemical systems

+ Development of process monitoring and control technologies applicable to molten salt systems

+ Calibration and maintenance of instruments, equipment, and facilities

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemical engineering, chemistry, or related field at the bachelor’s or master’s degree level with zero to three years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.

Position Requirements

+ Knowledge of general principles of chemistry, chemical engineering and chemical technology is required.

+ Demonstrated laboratory experience is required.

+ Skills with process design and engineering operations

+ Experience with electrochemistry is desired but not mandatory

+ Skills with the design, set-up, and execution of experiments

+ Skill in oral and written presentation of ideas, discussion of technical results and in the development of technical reports and presentation is required.
