TRAFFIC CONTROL AIDEHOURLY

OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS

Number of Positions: up to 200

Starting pay: $22.04 per hour

NOTE: This is a rolling posting. Applications for this position will be pulled every few weeks until July 31, 2024.

Successful candidates must pass a drug screen and a background investigation in order to be hired.

This position is open to current S.E.I.U & I.B.E.W. BIDDERS AND the PUBLIC. Only current City employees covered under the City’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with Public Safety – S.E.I.U. Local 73, I.B.E.W. – Local 21 ( Bargaining Unit #02 ) are considered BIDDERS and are eligible to bid. Qualified BIDDERS who properly submit a bid application will receive preference over any non-bidders.

Under general supervision, controls the flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic at assigned intersections and traffic areas leading into and out of special events, and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

+ Directs and controls the flow of traffic to ensure the safety of pedestrians crossing at intersections.

+ Performs special traffic control assignments at parades and special events to assist in crowd control to ensure the safe crossing of pedestrians and efficient vehicle flow.

+ Issues traffic citations for violations of the City’s traffic laws.

+ Prepares reports to document accidents or atypical incidents occurring during assigned shift.

+ Assists disabled and elderly pedestrians across intersections as required.

+ Answers inquiries and give geographic directions to the public.

+ Sets up and retrieves traffic cones and barricades for traffic and crowd control.

Additional duties may be required for this position.

THESE POSITIONS ARE PART-TIME AND ARE EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE .

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

· Willingness and ability to perform the duties of the job.

· Must be at least 19 years of age at the closing date of the application.

· Successful completion of a job training program is required after hire.

NOTE : Proof of age (e.g., current Driver’s License, State ID, Passport, etc.) must be submitted at the time of processing.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position is willing and able.

NOTE: This is a part-time position that does not offer benefits . Hours vary based on the needs of the City and there is no guarantee of work. A Traffic Control Aide – Hourly must be available to work anywhere in the City of Chicago and anytime events are scheduled. Employees will be given a monthly schedule two weeks prior to the start of the month. No employee can work more than 1,300 hours in a year.

+ Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one’s body, arms, and/or legs

City Colleges of Chicago – Intro to Emergency Management & Communications (OEMC) Certificate Preference: The City of Chicago offers a preference to individuals who have successfully completed the City of Chicago/City Colleges of Chicago partnership program resulting in a certificate of completion for the Introduction to Emergency Management & Communications (OEMC) course. In order to receive the OEMC/EMC Preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they successfully completed the program by answering “yes” or “no” to the question on the online application that asks, “Did you successfully complete the City Colleges of Chicago Introduction to Emergency Management & Communications (OEMC) Certificate Program and do you want to be considered for this preference?” In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your successful completion from the City Colleges of Chicago. You must attach a copy of your City Colleges of Chicago – Introduction to Emergency Management & Communications Completion Certificate. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the preference .
