Job Description

Eaton Corporation, Electrical Sector America (ES-A) is seeking a Model-Based Design (MBD) Chief Architect , to join the team. This hybrid role can be based at one of the following preferred Eaton locations: Milwaukee (WI), Pittsburg (PA), Atlanta (GA), Raleigh (NC), Chicago (IL), or Southfield (MI). Relocation will be provided. Up to 20%-30% travel will be required.

Reporting to the Technical Director for MBD/MBSE, the MBD Chief Architect will be an integrated member of an interdisciplinary product development team, with primary responsibilities around Model-Based Design of Control Systems and Embedded Firmware / Software. This role includes a heavily strategic element around MBD Architecture, Framework, and Capability Development. It also includes a tactical focus on deployment and direct support to projects across ES-A Divisions.

As a recognized Subject Matter Expert, you will be a primary point of contact for MBD initiatives, working with strategic partnerships across consulting, external research groups, and Eaton Centers of Excellence. The Architect will interface with several engineering functions, including Controls and Firmware, Hardware, Software, System Architects, Modeling and Simulation groups, and others to deliver expected outcomes.

In this role you will:

+ Model Based Design Framework Governance: Establish best-in-class MBD frameworks, from requirements down to final integration, including Controls Architecture Design, Requirements Engineering, Simulation Architectures, Auto Code Generation, Firmware Integration, and Advanced Testing Methodologies (ex. MIL, SIL, HIL), with automation.

+ Model Based Design Deployment Strategy and Execution: Define strategic and tactical streams to successfully deploy MBD across ES-A Divisions that currently express different maturity levels. Strongly collaborate and interface across various functions within SW, FW, and HW organizations and establish an engagement model that allows the organization to adopt new processes.

+ Define quantifiable metrics around Model Based Design adoption, including metrics like cycle time reduction, re-use, quality, etc., and work with the different teams to set Scorecards and own the delivery of such metrics.

+ Responsible for short and mid/long term roadmaps on MBD Capabilities (working with all divisions and COEs as required).

+ MBD Process Benchmarking and Standardization – establish benchmarking around Model Based Design (using internal and external consulting as required) and set metrics for continuous improvement. Lead and own all benchmarks and reporting workstreams with the ES-A MBD Community.

+ Educate and mentor engineers and leaders across the organization around Model Based Design, to create a culture shift that allows capability growth, standardization, and organizational engagement.

+ Lead ES-A System Engineering Initiatives for MBD, aligning on project priorities, strategizing the work to be executed by the team, and ultimately be responsible for overall delivery of the group’s programs and efforts in conjunction with Divisional capabilities and resources.

+ Serve as the Subject Matter Expert, driving the competence strategy and execution for Electrical Sector Americas in all required forums.

+ Lead the Model Based Design Community of Practice across ES-A Divisions.

Your Qualifications:

+ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related courses from an accredited institution with a relevant master’s or specialization in Model Based Design.

+ 10+ Years of experience with MATLAB/Simulink around the several aspects of the MBD Process (Requirements, Architecture, Controls Design, Model, Code, Generation, Simulation and Testing).

+ 7+ years’ experience with Complex Control Systems Architecture Design, including interfaces with Firmware and Hardware, and with the use of system model tools like System Composer and/or IBM Rapsody.

+ Strong experience with embedded C/C++, micro-controllers, FPGAs.

+ Proven experience of setting a strategy and successfully deploying Model Based Design workflows, with quantifiable improvement metrics around project acceleration and increased predictability.

+ Proven experience and leadership on educating, collaborating, and influencing organizations to adopt and engage with Model Based Design.

Your Technical Skills:

Demonstrated expertise on several areas of Model Based Design, from Requirements to final implemented embedded software code, covering:

+ Control Systems Architecture: Proficient in Control Systems Architecture and Design, and with the use of System Modeling Tools like System Composer, IBM Rhapsody, or others.

+ Requirements Engineering using tools such DNG, JAMA, or Doors. Requirement definition and decomposition from the system down to the individual components. Proficient with Simulink Requirements for lower-level requirement management derived from system requirements.

+ Control Systems Design and Testing: proficient in complex controls modeling with tools like Simulink and Stateflow, and covering different levels of application layers (ex. FPGA, embedded microprocessors, or DSPs). Proficient on the use of Mathwork tools like Model Advisor, Simulink Test and SLDV for design verification. Strong background on MIL and SIL testing, ideally with integrated and automated workflows connected with Requirements.

+ Auto-Code Generation: Very strong background in Auto Code Generation (C / C++) from Simulink / Stateflow Models. HDL Code Generation for FPGA applications is a plus.

+ Firmware Integration and testing: Strong background embedded C/C++, microprocessors, including floating point and fixed-point implementations, FPGA code, and integration of Auto-Generated Code with handwritten SW (ex. Use of Code Wrappers for auto-generated code); Proficient with SW testing tools related to Static and Dynamic Analysis. Proficient with SIL Methodologies (Software in the Loop).

+ Model and Software Simulation: Experience with controls integration with Plant Models for co-simulation. Experience on integrating C-code with Simulink (e.g., Using S-functions), allowing simulation of integrated Firmware structures (Auto-code + handwritten code).

+ Experience with Hardware in the Loop (HIL), with systems such as dSPACE, SpeedGoat, and Opal RT.

+ Ability to work and bridge different workflows, such as V-Cycle with Agile approaches.

+ Familiarity with several of the SW/FW development tools such as Confluence, Jira, or GitHub.

+ Experience with CI/CD and CI/CT methodologies and exposure to Test-Driven Development.
