Job Description


PNNL’s Coastal Sciences Division develops and deploys coastal science and engineering capabilities to empower a scientific approach to energy, environment, and security. Our capabilities include Earth system science modeling, ultratrace detection, comprehensive numerical modeling, development and testing of marine energy technologies, environmental monitoring, and water quality and biogeochemical process modeling.


The position will primarily support community driven design for coastal communities. Responsibilities will include developing cross community analysis based on technical assistance programs, such as the Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP) and Clean Energy to Communities (C2C) Some familiarity with marine energy (e.g., wave, tidal, ocean current), offshore wind energy, or ocean sciences is encouraged. The position may also require familiarity with shoreside infrastructure, such as microgrids and transmission, ports, and supply chain issues.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to advance their skills in developing approaches and tools to understand and respond to the needs of coastal, remote, island, and islanded communities engaging in renewable energy transitions and

climate adaption.

+ Review and synthesize literature, case studies, and tools related to these topics.

+ Collaborate with an interdisciplinary research team at PNNL and other national laboratories to advance modeling approaches and tools for community-driven energy transition.

+ Lead and contribute to scientific, peer-reviewed publications.

+ Manage independent work assigned by team members.

+ Networking with other professionals in the organization.

+ Contributions to publications and proposals.


Minimum Qualifications:

+ Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Recent or forthcoming PhD in engineering, environmental policy, marine science or related field.

+ Familiarity with marine energy, offshore wind energy, renewable energy, or ocean sciences.

+ Demonstrated interest and ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals

+ Experience working with collaborators with diverse backgrounds and interdisciplinary teams

+ Familiarity with community engagement

+ Familiarity with design methodology

+ Excellent written and oral communication skills.

+ Ability to work independently as well as with a team of interdisciplinary researchers.
