Job Description

Typical Duties

  • Provide patient care for procedures performed in the Cardiac Cath and EP Labs- interventional cardiac and vascular procedures, electronic device implantation/revisions/explant, transesophageal echocardiography, and structural heart disease procedures. 
  • Collect, assess, and document data in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care. Documentation of patient assessment and medical care will require basic computer skills to complete electronic medical record.
  • Assist the physician in the performance of cardiac procedures in the Cath/EP Lab.
  • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Delegate duties to professional and support personnel in absence of the charge nurse.
  • Apply principles of infection control and safety.
  • Assess psychosocial and physical status of patients presenting for these procedures.
  • Document and obtain accurate patient information for national registries including but not limited to ACC/NCDR and AHA registries.
  • Perform in-depth cardiovascular and sedation assessment in accordance with current CCH policies. Maintains a consistent level of moderate sedation during procedures.
  • Assure that informed consent has been obtained on the patient. 
  • Assure the performance of universal time-out before every procedure in the presence of the entire team, in accordance with hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the checking of daily quality controls for a wide range of equipment utilized in the Cardiac Cath and EP Lab, such as medication refrigerator, crash cart, point-of-care testing devices, etc.
  • Develop/integrate standards of care for patients presenting to the lab; implement safe, competent, and efficient care to patients.
  • Understand principles of radiological safety, techniques and X-ray equipment.
  • Understand the analysis, recording, and intervention equipment utilized in Cardiac Cath procedures. Participate in entering patient data into the Cath/EP database, as required.
  • Perform post-procedure visits or wellness checks, such as wound or site check and post-procedures wellness phone/video call.
  • Assist with pre-procedure workup, clinic support, telephone triage, patient transfer, and coordination of care with the Heart team, inpatient units/wards, and other institutions.
  • Take responsibility for pre, intra and postprocedural care of EP procedures, diagnostic, therapeutic, and interventional procedures performed in the Cath Lab.
  • Transport patients within and outside the department as needed.
  • Must be able to take calls or stay after scheduled hours based on a rotational call schedule for Cath/EP Lab emergencies.
  • Must be able to arrive to the cath lab within 30 minutes of an activation for cath lab emergencies, such as STEMI.
  • Performs any assign duties within the training, experience, and core competencies of the Cath Lab nurse.

 

  

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois 
  • Two years of recent nursing experience in an Adult Critical Care Unit, or Emergency Department OR 1 year of recent nursing experience in Cardiovascular Laboratory, Interventional Radiology, and/or Electrophysiology Laboratory.
  • Prior critical care experience with an emphasis on cardiology.
  • Prior experience using moderate or deep sedation.
  • Current experience and knowledge related to hemodynamic monitoring and titration of vasoactive medication infusions, radiological safety, techniques and X-ray equipment and other analysis and recording equipment utilized in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory
  • Must be able to respond to emergent calls in Cardiac Catheterization or Electrophysiology and arriving to the cath lab suite within 30 minutes of an activation for cardiac emergencies.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification obtained through the American Heart Association
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification obtained through the American Heart Association

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory nursing experience
  • Previous Nursing experience with an emphasis on cardiovascular patient care
  • Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse (CAPA)
  • Certification in Critical Care Nursing (CCRN)
  • Bilingual
