Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.
Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra's fixed assets, such as buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects, and Communications and Maintenance.
Reporting directly to the Director Milwaukee Engineering, the Signal Supervisor is responsible for the oversight of signal maintenance projects. Supervises and provides leadership and instruction to all field employees responsible for the proper operation of signal apparatus. Inspects on a periodic basis all signal apparatus for safe operation and compliance with Metra standard plans and practices, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Safety Standards and other accepted professional standards periodically. Ensure compliance of FRA test reports and hours of service documents. Evaluates and monitors the necessity of work through inspections. Available to work flexible hours, as required, in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends. Performs other related duties as needed to meet the on-going needs of the organization.
Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.


Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Electrical or related engineering field, OR, in lieu of degree, any combination of education and railroad signal experience that equal four (4) years.
In addition to #1, seven (7) years of railroad signal experience that include three (3) years of signal circuit troubleshooting and/or design of circuit modifications.
Four (4) years of supervisory experience is required.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Preferences:
Courses or training in mathematics, introductory electricity and electronics, digital electronics, and microprocessors is preferred.
Experience conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance is preferred.
Good oral and written communication skills.
