Job Description

This position is responsible for supervision of SCSD wastewater treatment plant process control and serves as second in command to the Plant Superintendent. This is a safety-sensitive position and is guided by assignments received from the Plant Superintendent but exercises independent judgment in accomplishing the work.

The regularly scheduled hours of this position will be Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., with a rotating schedule for weekends. Must be willing to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

· Perform, analyze, and interpret laboratory tests for the purpose of making operational adjustments.

· Recognizes equipment and process problems

· Coordinates wastewater and solids handling operations with maintenance and laboratory activities to minimize operational conflicts and optimize process control.

· Strong skills in problem analysis, decision making, interpersonal sensitivity, adaptability/flexibility, stress tolerance and time management

· Lead and respond effectively in emergency, hazardous, or other high stress circumstances

· Identify training needs, help develop materials, and instruct operators

· Maintains a clean and organized work place

· Knowledge of the occupational hazards in wastewater treatment plants and safety measures to be implemented.

· May be required to respond to emergency or abnormal facility situations outside of normal work shift

· May be required to be “on-call” and/or carry a District phone

· Assists in overseeing and implementing the preventive maintenance program of the plant

· Assists in the implementation of the plant safety program

Minimum Qualifications

· High school diploma or equivalent

· Valid Illinois Class 1 Wastewater Operator Certification is required within 6 months of hire

· Valid Illinois Driver's License is required

· Knowledge of technical standards and procedures required for the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility involving multiple advanced unit processes associated with secondary treatment such as activated sludge, sludge solids handling, and computer-based control systems, maintenance and laboratory operations.

Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physical, demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials, commonly 20 to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.

Tasks may also involve working in potentially dangerous and uncomfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as heat, humidity, odors, toxic agents, disease, noise, or electrical currents can cause discomfort and where there is a risk of injury.

Pay range: $70,970 to $86,512 DOQ
