Email a Friend Save Save Apply Now Position Summary: In healthcare: hospital chaplains are key resources engaged in supporting the emotional / spiritual / religious and ethnic needs of patients, families, and staff. Staff chaplains are trained to work with and support people from all nationalities, religious traditions, people with no religious tradition, and people who identify by life-style choices. Staff chaplains intentionally develop partnerships with other clinicians to ensure patient care that is culturally and ethically appropriate and respectful. A significant aspect of the staff chaplain’s role lies in their commitment to professional development to ensure competence with clinical best practices and growth that anticipates the needs from emerging clinical trends. Staff chaplains can provide support during and after routine, crisis, and critical incidents that can cause secondary staff traumatization Qualifications: EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Master’s Degree in in theological studies from an accredited institution, or faith tradition equivalent EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 2 years of ministry experience ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

+ Annual documentation of “Good Standing” with Ecclesiastical body

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Must be fluent in English and must have strong skills in written and oral communication. Must have moderate or advanced computer skills.

Essential Functions:

+ Clinical Responsibilities Include:* Conducts all service activities with respect for state and federal guidelines including HIPPA guidelines for confidentiality. Support patient care in clinical areas as assigned, usually through clinical rounds and rounds with treatment teams.* Support medical / surgical / procedural crisis, family conferences, end-of-life discussions, and withdrawal of treatment. * Advocate for the diversity and inclusion needs of patients / families / staff.* Assist with Advance Directives, and Ethics Consultations.* Support and facilitate the care of other faith tradition leaders from the community while remaining HIPPA compliant.* Triage and manage competing medical priorities and mentor PRN staff toward development of competent triage skills.* Educate, validate, and normalize patient/family/staff emotions around Grief & Loss and other emotional trauma while maintaining a non-anxious presence of active listening that helps enable appropriate response to the emotional/spiritual needs of others.* Utilizes the patient’s electronic medical record as part of the treatment team and to support patient care needs.

+ On-Call Responsibilities include:* Provide department back-up as needed and/or directed.* Ensure on-call handoffs follow the department ARC model of communication and include relevant observations to support on-going care to support critical needs.* Uses professional judgement to support unusually complex clinical situations using these situations to mentor department and campus staff.* Recognizes and ensures clinical staff support for critical incidents. * Maintains a working knowledge of the campus chain of command and utilize that chain of command structure for conflict resolution and problem solving for campus patient care and staff care needs

+ Department & Organizational Responsibilities Include:* At Methodist, typically Monday through Friday, staff chaplains work together as a team supporting the campus dividing and sharing coverage of both patient care areas and the on-call pager. * The staff chaplains also oversee communication of patient/family/staff needs for the PRN overnight and weekend chaplains.* At Proctor, typically Monday through Friday the staff chaplain provides general spiritual care and support to the campus, responds to crisis calls and oversee communication of patient/family/staff needs for the PRN chaplains. The Proctor staff chaplain also prioritizes critical situations for the weekend shifts. All staff chaplains: respect the faith / non-faith beliefs, traditions, cultural practices, and lifestyle choices of all persons. Review and maintain a current working knowledge of department and organizational policies and procedures and can provide education for new hires and other staff.* Provide creative problem solving, positive criticism, and challenge status quo regarding opportunities for improvement in our service role. Supports the mission, vision, and values of the department and medical center. Serve on committees as interested, applicable, or assigned by director. Attend department meetings and contribute to on-going discussions and provides education to other chaplains as needed; help staff understand clinical process changes, or better understand unusual clinical situations. Responsive to assignments from the Director as needed to facilitate the objectives of the department and the clinical needs of the medical center.
