Job Description

Scientist II (multiple positions) - Abbott Labs | Abbott Park, IL

Execute and conduct research, development, or scientific/ technical activities in areas of molecular and metabolic processes involved in cellular propagation. Responsible for facilitating, developing, or recommending improvements and/or new procedures related to products or processes. Provide technical review, direction and feedback to others and may lead small to medium projects. Develop data presentations for use within the organization. Responsible for investigations, project planning and execution, writing experimental reports, defining conclusions and determination of next steps. Execute experiments, accomplish established milestones, summarize data, and interpret results. Responsible for utilizing advanced controls for bioreactor and fermenter systems using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) or specialized user interface or software to control different types of equipment. Responsible for the handling of mammalian and microbial cell types in aseptic manner, and the growth of different culture types in various small scale bioreactor systems. Use aseptic techniques and best handling practices in laboratory environment for the propagation of mammalian and microbial cell cultures to maintain purity of cultures in a laboratory environment. Utilize various downstream recovery techniques to capture and collect biologic molecules. Maintain in-depth knowledge of filtration types and processes such as normal flow, tangential flow, and depth filtration. Utilize analytical equipment to monitor and determine cell cycle, health, and productivity, such as Flex2, VI Cell, REBEL, HPLC, SDS-PAGE, Immuno-blot, western blot, Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA), microscope, spectrophotometer (UV-Vis), and/or complex bio-assay tools such as Bia core and Octet platforms. Conduct complex experiments and recommend options for other project approaches or experiments. Use Design of Experiment (DoE) methodology to evaluate complex process design challenges and develop statistically robust process recommendations using JMP, Minitab, and/or MODDE statistical analysis software. Employ bioreactor knowledge process controls for maintaining cell cultures in suspension, and fermentation knowledge including handling microbial cultures in flasks. Multi-parallel bioreactor systems are regularly used to perform process optimization and investigational studies. Analyze and evaluate data from multiple disciplines, considering various factors. Possess and apply knowledge of principles, practices and procedures and can drive projects to completion with minimal oversight. Evaluate process conditions and define impact on critical quality attributes, enabling risk mitigation controls and recommendations. Apply knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures to evaluate, interpret and present data, through analytics solutions, and software-based tools for data visualization. Responsible for recognizing and resolving basic to intermediate technical problems. Act as CFT member by participating in project planning and updates, execute project plan with oversight from leaders, and participate in defining project goals. Responsible for developing timelines and comprehending resource requirements. Develop simple timelines in order to comprehend resource requirements and presents scientific observations to management level within the organization. Participate in routine maintenance and laboratory safety. Responsible for utilizing incubators, water baths, microscopes, biological safety cabinets (Class II), fume hoods, pipette and liquid handling systems, filtrations and centrifugations, coolers, and freezers, and ensuring liquid nitrogen freezer safety. Document experimental results and procedures independently, including verification and validation reports according to established guidelines. Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

Bachelor’s degree or foreign academic equivalent in Biology, Biotechnology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, or a related scientific field of study with at least 2 years of professional experience in: (i) molecular and metabolic processes involved in cellular propagation; (ii) handling of mammalian and microbial cell types in aseptic manner, and the growth of different culture types; (iii) investigations, project planning and execution, writing experimental reports, defining conclusions and determination of logical next steps; (iv) maintaining cell cultures in suspension, and fermentation knowledge including handling microbial cultures in flasks; (v) participating in routine maintenance and laboratory safety; and (vi) utilizing incubators, water baths, microscopes, biological safety cabinets (Class II), fume hoods, pipette and liquid handling systems, filtrations and centrifugations, coolers and freezers, and ensuring liquid nitrogen freezer safety.

An EOE. 40 hrs/wk. Send resumes to: Abbott Laboratories, Elvia Salazar, Willis Tower, 233 South Wacker Dr., Fl. 25, Dept 32, Chicago, IL 60606.  Refer to ad code: ABT-0038-ES.
