Summary The incumbent of this position performs as a supervisor of employees performing Food Service Worker duties, and is under the administrative and technical direction of a Supervisory Dietitian in Nutrition & Food Services. Responsibilities Major Duties: Supervise all areas of food production and service including food preparation, nourishment, tray delivery and retrieval. Receive and inspect food deliveries. Requisition all supplies needed for the different areas in Food Service. Have responsibility for efficient overall sanitation throughout the food service area. Conduct menu conferences, complete schedule assignments, and record food temperatures. Complete the tray assembly area report. Monitor and ensure that the proper procedures are carried out in the Diet Communication Center. Oversee work performance of employees under his/her supervision, discuss work performance and problems with them, and provide guidance. Instruct subordinates on difficult work operations. Provide instruction in correct sanitation and cleaning procedures, such as how to mop a floor, how to clean stainless steel, etc. Carry out the responsibilities of the position within general instructions, standard procedures and established policies. Ensure that subordinates complete the tasks to which they are assigned. Maintain inventory of food service supplies and equipment. Make recommendations for the purchase of small equipment and supplies in order to ensure that the appropriate materials are available to do the job. Provide individual and/or group instruction for employees in the correct care and maintenance of food service equipment. Review work while in progress or on completion to ensure the correct portion sizes, serving dishes, etc., have been used. Change work plans, work assignments and methods as necessary to reduce or control costs and to accomplish the work of the unit as effectively as possible in both usual and emergency situations. Possess knowledge on the correct foods to be served on modified diets. Provide guidance and assistance for lower grade employees in making decision when assembling patient trays. Ensure that all food supply items required are available for meeting the meal service schedule. Supervise the tray assembly operation and all aspects of sanitation. Spot check the activities in all areas where meals and nourishment supplies are distributed to ensure quality and timeliness standards are met. Conduct all quality assurance monitors and sanitation reviews in accordance with established procedures. Establish and ensure adherence to the policies and procedures for all food production activities in accordance with applicable guidelines. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Education Additional Information A supports the use of telework as a way to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities. HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities. The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced VA competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. To be well-qualified, applicants must possess experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors if applicable, and must be proficient in most of the requirements of the job. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee’s credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.
