BID/JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

PAINTER

DEPARTMENT OF STREETS & SANITATION

Number of Positions: 1

Starting Salary: $51.55

These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City’s collective bargaining agreement with PAINTERS COUNCIL 14 (BARGAINING UNIT 39).

Under supervision, performs journey level work in the preparation and painting of interior and exterior walls, floors, ceilings, structures, and surfaces of municipal facilities; and performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties

+ Reads work orders to assess work required and to determine most appropriate preparation and application methods to use

+ Applies primer, paint, stain, varnish, and other finishes to multi-surfaces such as, concrete, metal, glass, wood, vinyl, sheetrock and plaster with sprayers, rollers and brushes

+ Cleans and prepares surfaces to ensure paint and other finishes will adhere properly

+ Fills and smooth’s holes, cracks, and joints with spackle, caulk, and compounds

+ Removes old paint from wood, brick, metal and other surfaces by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, air blasting and power washing

+ Erect scaffolding, ladders and operate aerial bucket to perform paint work above 6 feet high

+ Mixes latex and oil-based paints, tints primers and prepares epoxies

+ Paints viaducts

+ Loads and unloads equipment and supplies from work vehicle

+ Spreads drop cloths to protect equipment and surrounding areas

+ Cleans paint applicators, equipment and work sites after paint jobs are completed

+ Prepares work activity reports

+ Moves furnishings, equipment, and other obstacles to complete paint jobs, as needed

+ Will be required to drive a city vehicle to city wide assignments.

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Successful completion of a U.S. Department of Labor registered painting apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required for this position.

NOTE: Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

+ Exposure to outdoor weather conditions

+ Work performed above or below ground level

+ Work performed using scaffolds, Aerial Bucket, and ladders

· Ability to stand for extended or continuous periods of time.

+ Ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one’s body, arms, and/or legs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

+ Heavy lifting (up to 75 lbs.) is required (e.g., stackable scaffolding)

+ Ability to work above ground on staging equipment and or Aerial Bucket for extended periods of time

NOTE: You must provide your professional license, or training certificates at the time of processing, if applicable. You must also provide your valid U.S. Driver’s License at time of processing.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position does not require a test or interview. Applicants who successfully apply for the position, meet the minimum qualifications, and possess the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be hired in seniority or lottery/random order.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

+ Previous work experience in exterior painting

+ Proficiency in work experience performing paint jobs above ground level

+ ANSI Certification

+ OSHA 10-hour Certification
