Overview

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.

PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate’s researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high-caliber sophomore, junior or senior high school students for intern assignments within the High School Young Women in Science (YWiS) Program. This summer internship is a research-based educational experience for sophomore, junior and senior females. The students must have an expressed interest in and potential for educational opportunities and careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). YWIS is a 10-week program, estimated based on start date; the anticipated start date for summer cohort will be June 18, 2024.

Permitting and siting constitutes the key part of the wind turbine setup process involving several factors which are often scattered in several data sources and modalities such as textual environmental and economic reports, topographicalmaps, etc. We are building AI driven framework that will efficiently synthesize data from multiple sources, allows better search/retrieval of information and finally enable critical insights via chat assistant applications.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

+ Applicants must be currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior in a public or private high school at time of application

+ Applicants must be 16 years of age by start date

+ Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing)

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Relevant course work in Linear Algebra, Basic Computer Science, Programming

+ Skills in Python and objective-oriented programming

+ Skills in communication and writing
