YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago was recently awarded a grant from the State of Illinois to offer construction pre-apprenticeship programs to be delivered at several YMCA centers including the South Side YMCA in Chicago's Woodlawn community, Fry Family YMCA in Naperville and Buehler YMCA in Palatine. The goal of the program is to prepare participants to enter Department of Labor Certified Apprenticeship Programs in the construction trades. We are seeking qualified and experienced instructors with construction experience to teach the NCCER Core Construction curriculum to our IL Works Program participants.
Salary: $40/hour plus bonus if 80% of participants successfully complete the math components of the program
Duties and Responsibilities:
Attain and/or maintain NCCER Instructor Certification status (YMCA will sponsor qualified candidates as needed to attain these certifications)
Apply engaging, effective and equitable teaching techniques to build rapport with participants through a welcoming, supportive, and equitable classroom environment
Patience and creativity in delivering intensive math curriculum and ensuring students are proficient in key construction math concepts including:
Understanding the relationship between force and the motion of an object
Calculating speed, distance, and time and understanding the relationship between them
Distinguishing between weight and mass, center of gravity for objects of different shapes and sizes
Reading a Ruler (measurement tools, English and metric system, basic operations, and simple conversions.
Costing Projects (adding, subtracting, dividing, decimals, fractions, simply equations, etc.)
Sizing Projects (square inches, feet, and yards, squares, triangles, rectangles, area and perimeter, etc.)
Surveying Land (measurements, Pythagorean theorem, area, perimeter, etc.)
Site Preparation (volume, measurement conversions, etc.)

Leverage technology to facilitate learning and enrich the classroom experience
Deliver performance evaluations and exams
Maintain timely and accurate student records, including attendance, module completion, exam performance, other evaluations, and participant performance profiles using the WorkNet database
Work collaboratively with IL Works Program Director, Core Construction Curriculum Instructor and all other IL Works program team members to ensure participants are able to successfully complete math components of certification exams and apprenticeship entrance exams
Adhere to all NCCER policies and procedures
Qualifications:
NCCER Instructor Certification or ability to attain one prior to the cohort start date
Prior teaching experience and demonstrated ability to effectively teach adult learners
Ability to utilize technology to enhance teaching and maintain required records
Ability to be both supportive and firm to ensure participant compliance with program requirements
Commitment to increasing diversity in the construction trades
Ability and willingness to work with team members to support program participants and ensure successful completion of the program and transition into Department of Labor certified apprenticeship programs in the construction trades
Schedule
Part-time, limited term, contract position
Approximately 5-8 hours per week for 10 weeks
Instructionmay willbe offered on weeknight evenings and Saturdays, as well as one-on-one tutoring on an as needed basis at mutually agreed upon times
Classroom dates are April 1 through June 15
Some meeting times will be required outside of these hours and dates

Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children
Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
Completing all child abuse prevention training as required
