Description
This ED has 33 beds and sees 150/160 patients a day on average. The schedule for this position is three 12-hour shifts 7p - 7:30a with every third weekend required.
The Emergency Department Technician position reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
The Paramedic provides patient care within a defined scope of practice that includes patient care, monitoring and observation, specified treatments and procedures, provision of environmental and personal safety and effective communication.
The Paramedic functions under the direction of the Emergency Nurse (RN) and Physician. The Paramedic will also be responsible to collect pertinent data within their certification scope of responsibilities and report these clinical findings to the RN and Physicians.
Responsibilities:
Assists patients with basic care needs and any other duties related to the well-being of the patient following established nursing policies and procedures.
Prioritizes patient care activities based on patient needs and unit activity under the direction of the Clinical Shift Coordinator and/or Relief Charge Nurse.
Administers treatments and various procedures (within their scope of practice) to patients as ordered by the physician and directed by the Professional Nursing Staff including but not limited to the following:
Vital signs
Orthostatic blood pressures
Attaches cardiac monitor.
Obtains 12 lead ECG.
Identifies abnormal cardiac rhythms and life-threatening arrhythmias, pulse oximetry, capnography.
Oxygen administration including nasal cannula, oxy mask, non-rebreather mask.
Obtains finger stick blood sugar and specimen collections such as urine or stool or wound.
Wound care
Sterile technique glove application and tray set up
Aseptic technique and wound cleansing
Wound dressings - steri strips, tube gauze, dry gauze, Telfa/adaptic, antibiotic ointment application, cold and sterile saline burn dressings
Assists with OB/GYN care.
Assists physician with exam.
Obtain visual acuity.
Eye care including eye irrigation and eye patch application.
Orthopedic care and applications including splints, wraps, immobilizers, and crutches.
Assist in code situations.
Phlebotomy
Start and discontinue IVs.
Managing intravenous maintenance fluids
Identifies changes in patient condition and notifies RN/physician.

Qualifications
Required:
Current EMT P license without restrictions or EMT B withat least one (1) year relative experience in a similar capacity; including, but not limited to: Military experience, private ambulance company, fire department or healthcare setting
High School graduate or equivalent
CERT EMT P License without restrictions or EMT B
CERT Basic Life Support via American Heart Association
Preferred:
ACLS and PALS certification
