Job Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President for Research (VPR), the Chief Research Operations Officer for Research (CROO) supports and advises the VPR in the operational oversight of the Office for Research (OR).The CROO provides thought leadership in partnering with the VPR and fellow OR senior team members to ensure comprehensive support services are in place to meet the current and future needs of the University's research enterprise.The CROO will develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with schools/units outside of OR and serve as a liaison between the VPR and senior staff across the University.
The CROO will oversee and set priorities for the major operational units within OR including Sponsored Programs Pre-Award, Compliance, and Finance & Business Operations. They will also be responsible for close collaboration with the Sponsored Programs Post-Award group in the Office of Financial Operations.
The CROO keeps the VPR informed of external developments impacting the University's research enterprise, facilitating the University's ability to meet shifting requirements.The CROO ensures OR remains positioned to deliver outstanding service to Northwestern's research community while upholding compliance with ethical and regulatory requirements.
The CROO will support the OR mission and values of understanding empathy, modeling accountability, ensuring fairness, embracing community, and valuing creativity.
Specific Responsibilities:
Oversee and support operational units; support the professional development and growth of the members of the operational teams.
Assist the VPR in keeping the senior leadership of the University apprised of research compliance issues and activities and making them aware of significant new compliance developments.
Understand and advise on federal and state regulatory environment and University policies.
Collaborate with unit leaders to ensure appropriateness of OR policies.
Attend relevant professional meetings and participate in national forums.
Collaborate with the VPR, AVPs and unit directors in OR to create a collegial and mutually reinforcing management team in alignment with OR's Core Values.

Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in research administration across the award lifecycle, preferably at a complex academic medical center, to ensure a strong appreciation and respect for the connectivity and reliance of the research mission on the scientific/administrative partnership.
Demonstrated experience leading a large-scale research organization, especially planning, executing and leading change management for major initiatives and transformation activities.
Demonstrated success driving a diverse team of leaders to set, achieve and exceed performance and service expectations and operate as an effective, collaborative team.
Strong industry network with peer professionals via individual relationships and engagement with formal industry organizations (Council on Governmental Relations (COGR)/Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP)/National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA)) to keep NU at the forefront of the evolving research administration industry.
Advanced degree (e.g., MA, MS, JD, PhD).
Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws and regulations.

Balanced perspective for compliance and internal controls responsibilities of an expert administrative staff, against the service and efficiency expectations of a highly productive research faculty.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across forums and audiences, with the ability to clearly communicate complex topics, develop and foster relationships and networks, and spark collaboration.
Ability to work effectively and proactively in a complex organization and political environment.
Effective leadership skills, with ability to anticipate problems, and formulate and implement solutions.
Strong interpersonal and management skills, including ability to: prioritize work; manage multiple projects simultaneously; manage and develop staff while delegating authority and responsibility.
Ability to work effectively with a wide range of internal and external constituencies, including faculty and staff, as well as federal agencies and higher education associations.
Ability to maintain a working environment characterized by effective teamwork and collaboration with peers.
