Job Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President for Research (VPR), the Chief Research Operations Officer for Research (CROO) supports and advises the VPR in the operational oversight of the Office for Research (OR). The CROO provides thought leadership in partnering with the VPR and fellow OR senior team members to ensure comprehensive support services are in place to meet the current and future needs of the University’s research enterprise. The CROO will develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with schools/units outside of OR and serve as a liaison between the VPR and senior staff across the University.
The CROO will oversee and set priorities for the major operational units within OR including Sponsored Programs Pre-Award, Compliance, and Finance & Business Operations. They will also be responsible for close collaboration with the Sponsored Programs Post-Award group in the Office of Financial Operations.
The CROO keeps the VPR informed of external developments impacting the University’s research enterprise, facilitating the University’s ability to meet shifting requirements. The CROO ensures OR remains positioned to deliver outstanding service to Northwestern’s research community while upholding compliance with ethical and regulatory requirements.
The CROO will support the OR mission and values of understanding empathy, modeling accountability, ensuring fairness, embracing community, and valuing creativity.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Oversee and support operational units; support the professional development and growth of the members of the operational teams.
- Assist the VPR in keeping the senior leadership of the University apprised of research compliance issues and activities and making them aware of significant new compliance developments.
