100% Remote

About the Team:

The Item Cloud Green team drives innovation at College Board by developing an internal-facing web application to support the digital transformation of our core products. The team consists of 3 sub-teams, each owning a unique piece of a high-impact and secure internal React applications focused on our internal content creation processes. We own the full stack, from the infrastructure in AWS to the back-end APIs to the front-end code. We leverage serverless infrastructure, in the cloud, utilizing modern technologies and novel techniques to be a force-multiplier for the programs we serve. We are remote, but close-knit. We are strong advocates of work/life balance and flexibility with schedules, when needed. We are proactive, passionate, and outcome-oriented, putting a premium on quality and efficiency. We are agile, but we are also exploring accomplishing our work through mob programming. About the Opportunity:

As a Software Engineering Manager on our team, you engage a wide range of skills and experience in technology to lead a group of developers in their efforts to architect, implement, test, and deploy their code in a multi-environment infrastructure. You help unblock the team when they're stuck, which could include digging into the code yourself, pair programming, training, or pointing developers in the right direction. You utilize your experience in basic web design, full-stack development, and DevOps (CI/CD & cloud infrastructure) to deliver a high-impact content creation web app that integrates with a newly emerging content management ecosystem. You are communicative, approachable, self-driven, and collaborative. You are still valuable in the code base, reviewing pull requests and assisting the team, as needed. But your focus is leading the team in large projects from start to finish. This includes meeting with stakeholders, collaborating with designers, writing stories, delegating tasks, and ensuring their completion.

In this role, you will:
  • Collaborate with leadership, stakeholders, and design to set the team's roadmap and gather requirements for specific features.
  • Manage projects from start to scheduled finish, ensuring team members are unblocked, productive, and working collaboratively.
  • Guide individual team members in their career paths, annual goals, and performance.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, architects, and our security professionals to design and implement performant and highly secure React components, Node.js microservices, NoSQL databases, and serverless infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of our customers' business processes and operations.
  • Participate in pair programming and mob programming sessions, solving complex problems, and innovating new ideas.
  • Provide leadership and advocacy for code quality and best practices, ensuring the team refactors messy code, maintains test coverage, and roots out vulnerabilities.
  • Lead conversations on proposed architecture, testing strategies, developer experience improvements, security enhancements, performance optimization, and fault-tolerance.

About you, you have:
  • Ideally 5-7 years of software development experience in a production environment.
  • Solid experience with React, Node.js, TypeScript, REST and CRUD.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-based technologies, ideally with AWS.
  • Intermediate knowledge of AuthN, AuthZ and/or RBAC.
  • Practical experience with Unit, Integration, and E2E testing.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching technology teams to consistently deliver high-quality products that align to customer requirements.
  • Proven experience in ensuring teams adhere to development best practices and security policies and procedures.

Differentiators:
  • Experience with AWS resources including any mix of Route 53, EC2, S3, CloudFront, VPCs, Security Groups, ELB, Lambdas, IAM, CloudWatch and SecretsManager.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker, CI/CD and NoSQL.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CDK), functional programming concepts, Test-Driven Development (TDD), Behavior-Driven Development (BDD).
  • Knowledge in DevOps best practices, Developer Experience (DX) topics, and User Experience (UX) concepts.

About Our Benefits & Compensation

College Board offers a competitive benefits and compensation program that attracts top talent looking to make a difference in education. The hiring range for a new employee in this position is $120,000 to $165,000. College Board differentiates salaries by location so where you live will narrow the portion of this range in which you can expect a salary. Your salary will be carefully determined based on your location, relevant experience, the external labor market, and the pay of College Board employees in similar roles.
