Legal

From airports to boardrooms, our Legal team provides advice and counsel on all aspects of the business, assessing legal risks and compliance, while our Ethics and Compliance team ensures that we run an ethically sound operation. Together, these teams help us make the best possible decisions for our airline, to run our business with integrity, ensuring our airline operates lawfully and ethically, creating a company we are all proud to work for.

Job overview and responsibilities

Environmental counsel for in-house legal department. Provide practical and timely legal counsel to the Company on various environmental legal matters, reporting to the Managing Counsel, Environmental & Sustainability.

+ Provide counseling on compliance with environmental laws and regulations including the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, CERCLA, RCRA, TSCA, analogous state, local laws, and regulations.

+ Deliver compliance counseling to Global Environmental Affairs Department and operational business units on environmental laws and regulations, environmental compliance audits, permitting, and other environmental projects.

+ Prepare environmental compliance plans, policies, and work with the business to drive successful implementation.

+ Conduct environmental due diligence, draft, and negotiate environmental provisions of leases, licenses, access agreements, other real estate agreements and commercial agreements including services agreements.

+ Review of marketing and promotional material for environmental sustainability considerations.

+ Conduct related legal research, review, and validation of substantiation in support of related materials.

+ Provide legal support for environmental and sustainability legal matters under the supervision of the Managing Counsel, Environmental & Sustainability, and other members of the Legal Department.

+ Represent the Company in environmental regulatory enforcement actions and investigations, including under CERCLA, CAA, CWA, analogous state, local laws, and regulations.

+ This position is hybrid based in Chicago with up to 15% travel required.

Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

+ Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

+ Must be a current member in good standing of a bar association.

+ Authorized to practice law in-house in the state of Illinois.

+ 5+ years of experience in an in-house, government, or large firm private practice setting.

+ 3+ years of environmental regulatory experience.

+ Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners.

+ Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

+ Business insight and ethical approach with the ability to change priorities as needed by the Company’s business.

+ Must be legally authorized to work in the US for any employer without sponsorship.

+ Legal experience within the aviation industry preferred.
