Job Description Summary
The Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist will provide care to patients with disabling conditions of limbs or loss of limbs by fitting and making orthoses or prostheses under the direction of a physician.

Job Description

The Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist will:
  • Examines and evaluates patients' prosthetic and orthotic needs in relation to disease entity and functional loss.
  • Measures and makes needed casts.
  • Formulates design of prostheses or orthoses including selecting materials, making case measurements and designing model modifications and layouts.
  • Performs fittings, including static and dynamic alignments, of devices and makes necessary alterations.
  • Evaluates prosthesis or orthosis on patient and makes adjustments to assure fit, function, cosmesis and quality of work.
  • Educates patients and family in prosthesis or orthoses use and care.
  • Evaluates patient progress and maintains patient records and progress notes.
  • Assists technicians and residents in activities related to the development of prosthesis and orthoses.
  • Assists with the instruction of orthotic/prosthetic residents as they complete required elements and/or as need by the residency program.
  • Presents continuing education programs regarding prosthetics and orthotics evaluation and fabrication to health care professionals.
  • Monitors inventory of all required departmental supplies.
  • Monitors quality control, OSHA, ABC, and Joint Commission compliance related to all facets of patient care in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships
  • Reports directly to the Manager, Clinical Operations - Prosthetics and Orthotics.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Work requires the level of knowledge normally acquired by completing an Associate of Arts program and formal training in Prosthetics from an accredited school in Orthotic and Prosthetic Education.
  • Must be a Certified Prosthetist (or board eligible) and a Certified Orthotist (or board eligible) by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics, Inc.
  • Possess or obtain an active IL license as a certified Prosthetists and a certified Orthotist.
  • Two or more years of clinical experience in all aspects of Prosthetic and Orthotic rehabilitation at all levels of functional loss, disease processes, and/or amputations, including the fabrication of prostheses and orthoses.
  • One or more years of clinical experience in administering evaluations and fabricating equipment.
  • Understanding the growth and development of infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Analytical ability is required to gather information from patient evaluations and recommend solutions to technical and administrative problems.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with patients and staff at all levels.
  • Ability to move casts.
  • Refined computer skills and/or familiarity with electronic medical records. Specifically minimum proficiency with MS Office products (i.e. Outlook, Excel, etc.) and adequate typing skills.

Working Conditions
  • Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
