Senior Editor

at MRA - The Management Association in Chicago, Illinois, United States

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Editor
Company: Leff Communications
Location: Remote – US only
Salary Range: $100,000-$150,000/year

About the Job
Our team of editors, designers, strategists, and client leads work together for some of the world’s best-known and most respected organizations and brands.

As a senior editor, you may finish coaching a junior colleague on a report about the future of the banking workforce and immediately transition to leading a client kickoff call on urban mobility or discussing an infographic on agile organizations with the design team.

You’ll work closely with our clients—experts, executives, and consultants from diverse disciplines—to develop distinctive content that captures and holds the attention of their target audience. You will not be a copy editor or proofreader but a trusted partner and editorial adviser to authors whose names are on the byline. Your time will be spent writing and editing articles, reports, and other B2B content. You will usually be provided with “raw” content—a PowerPoint deck, a short outline, or call notes—and asked to write it out into crisp, actionable insights, and then iteratively revise the text and exhibits with the authors, supported by your Leff colleagues. Your primary goal is to ensure each piece is crafted into a logical narrative that showcases our clients’ distinctive perspectives.

Our projects often require working with time-pressed clients on ambitious deadlines, often with some degree of ambiguity, while upholding the highest editorial integrity and quality standards. Some of your projects may be the 15th priority on a client’s running to-do list. Others may be the most important thing a client team will work on all year. You will need to adapt your approach and interaction style accordingly.

In addition to participating in editorial projects, you’ll be expected to become fluent in our clients’ publishing priorities and processes, stay updated on business trends, and determine—sometimes in partnership with colleagues in our strategy studio—the ideal content formats for each project.

Finally, as a member of a nimble and fast-growing organization, you will participate in internal projects, strategic initiatives, and professional development as needed. Lifelong learners and the curious are our people.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks
Lead client workstreams and thought leadership projects independently, with the support of Leff colleagues in client ops, design, production, and strategy.
Counsel clients on high-level editorial strategy and act as a trusted adviser.
Shape “raw” information, such as research, analysis, examples, and interview material, into approachable content that appeals to its intended audience. If you can take a jumble of ideas and tease out a narrative that leads to eloquently written insights—and if you can direct junior colleagues in doing so—you may be a good fit.
Write outlines and drafts, iterating with author teams to incorporate feedback and refine logical arguments and narratives. If the editorial process energizes you and can help clients not fall in love with their own first ideas—or drafts—you may enjoy this role.
Be adaptable and flexible in making a client’s vision a reality. If you get attached to your vision for projects, you might find the work draining. However, if you approach the work with a commitment to serve the client and their vision, you might be a fit.
Differentiate between business jargon and industry vocabulary to ensure a balance of sophistication and approachability in the content. You may work well with our clients if you can kindly and effectively guide experts attached to industry-specific ways of framing certain ideas.
Guide discussions and interviews with experts and clients—and train junior colleagues in developing those skills. If you are comfortable leading discussions of topics in which you are not the expert but can quickly demonstrate comfort with the topic, you could probably help your editorial team gain a client team’s trust.
Work effectively and efficiently with project- and account-management colleagues and editorial and design production to shepherd projects through the editorial and design process. If you’re considerate and habitually think of ways to make life easier for your coworkers, you would be a great fit on our team.
Think strategically—on behalf of clients and their audiences—about using different formats to convey a message, make an argument, or inform on a topic. You might be a good fit if you like grabbing opportunities to do something new and interesting—or something old but better—testing it and learning from it.
Participate in the ongoing conversation about better serving our clients and supporting our colleagues. We like people who are organized, collaborative, and reliable.
Other duties as assigned.
