Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a candidate to fill a full time Civil Site/Ports Designer position in our St. Louis, MO; St. Charles, MO; Kansas City, MO; Indianapolis, IN; Springfield, IL; Peoria, IL; McHenry, IL; Nashville, TN; or Minneapolis, MN office.
Position Profile
This person is expected to work as part of multidisciplinary design teams to plan and execute infrastructure projects for a variety of clients primarily related to inland ports, river terminals, multimodal freight facilities, and industrial site development, with additional work with local governments and state departments of transportation.  Projects are likely to include market and feasibility studies, planning and design of new or redeveloped multimodal facilities, and reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure such as in-river and riverfront structures, roads, rail and grade crossings, utilities, culverts, and stormwater systems. Position requires the ability to serve as a key member of the project design team developing designs and providing direction to CADD/technician staff in the areas of civil and site design including, but not limited to in-river and riverfront infrastructure, rail and roadways, site grading, stormwater design, utilities, and agency and railroad coordination.  Position requires the ability to work on a variety of projects, take direction from multiple project managers, and coordinate with other staff.
A Day in the Life of a Civil Designer at Hanson
Here’s a snapshot of what you would do in this role:
Work within the Logistics Discipline as a key member supporting design development for predominately port authorities and industrial clients across the nation and North and Central America.
Preparation and review of technical documents.
Preparation and review of complex design calculations.
Preparation and review of construction documents for infrastructure such as dock, cell, and dolphin structures; roads, rail, and grade crossings; utilities; culverts; and stormwater systems.
Work with project managers to develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and lists of deliverables for related tasks.
Work with clients to deliver cost-effective and constructable projects.
Deliver design tasks on time and within budget.
Provide technical support to other areas of Hanson.
Review contractor submittals and observe construction on-site to assess conformance with plans and specifications.
Interact with clients to discuss existing and future projects and how to cost-effectively deliver a project to meet client requirements.
Participate in development of proposals, statement of qualifications, and similar business development-type documents.
Coordinate with Project Managers and Logistics Discipline Manager to help track project backlog and staffing requirements.
Other duties as assigned.
We feel the following qualifications would set you up for success in this role:
Technical Skills:
Experience with AutoCAD/Civil3D software is preferred
Comparable experience with Microstation/PowerGeopak/Inroads (OpenRoads Connect or SS4), coupled with the willingness and capability to learn AutoCAD/Civil3D is also acceptable
Soft Skills:
Effective oral communication and technical writing ability

Ability to translate scope requirements into clear and concise deliverables that meet client requirements while meeting budget and schedule requirements
Demonstrated ability to communicate and grow relationships with all levels of staff within internal and external agencies and clients
Interest in and willingness to learn about the planning and design of inland ports, river terminals, multimodal freight facilities, freight logistics and industrial site development is required
Education/Experience:
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field is required
0-10 years of general civil engineering experience with an emphasis on site development
Experience with ports, river terminals, rail, and/or roadway engineering is a plus
Successfully passed FE exam or scheduled to take before graduation
Professional Engineer license and/or AICP certification is a plus
