Job Summary:
Manage an operations and engineering staff responsible for university-wide data, wireless, video and voice (VoIP) transport services.Responsible for day-to-day operational performance of the IP network and supporting network and information security services.Provides strategic direction and leads in planning, development, implementation, and support of existing and new services related to data networking, network automation/orchestration software development, and information security infrastructure.
Specific Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning
Directs the evaluation of new and emerging technologies.
Oversees design, installation, and support of a stable, scalable, cost-effective, state-of-the-art network for university-wide data, wireless, video and voice (VOIP) transport needs.
Design & Implementation
Manage end-to-end design and implementation of NU's distribution of voice, data, video, and converged communications services.
Develops short and long-term strategies for existing and new services.
Leads planning and implemention
Administration
Evaluates new and emerging technologies.
Documents functional and technical specifications.
Leads RFP process.Coordinates vendor product demonstrations, setup evaluation criteria and development recommendations for purchase of new hardware/software.
Develops relationships with vendors.
Recommends cost-effective solutions that meets the needs of the campus community.
Fosters relationships with other NUIT groups, peer institutions, National research networks, services providers and vendors.
Represents NU and presents at regional and national conferences.
Maintains awareness of evolving information technologies through professional publications, outside contacts, and ongoing professional development.
Development
Develops short and long-term strategies for existing and new services.Leads planning and implementation.
Manage staff for troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and corrective actions to ensure the highest availability and overall integrity of NU's distribution of voice, data, video, and converged communications services.
Assist in budget preparation and development of funding models.
Performance
Motivates and inspires staff with an emphasis on quality and customer satisfaction.
Consults with other IT groups and users to diagnose and resolve problems in a timely fashion while stressing user service.
Analyzes and isolates root cause for incidents and recurring problems.
Provides solutions to user questions and other queries such as connectivity problems, performance issues, functionality, outages etc.
Utilizes available tools to monitor performance and respond appropriately.
Supervises
Manages projects ensuring timelines and deliverables are met and meet expectations.
Miscellaneous
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major such as computer science, information technology, or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
10 years' experience in a large, complex telecommunications environment with hand-on experience.
5 years' experience in managing/leading teams or large projects with resource management responsibilities.
7 years' experience with IP networking, including hands on experience with Cisco and/or Juniper equipment.Demonstrated proficiency and direct experience with multiple network operating systems (Cisco IOS, Juniper Junos, Aruba AOS/CX) and high level scripting/programming languages.Proven experience with switching and routing protocols including IP, BGP, OSPF and MPLS.Excellent understanding of the TCP/IP protocol suite.
