Civil Service Title: Medical Sonographer Specialist (U)

The individual in this position is responsible for providing sonography services and procedures for patients at all SIU ultrasound sites.

5% of time
Administrative Responsibilities
A. Provide assistance in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating fetal and gynecologic evaluation policies, reporting/recording devices, procedures and equipment.
B. Make recommendations regarding need for change in sonogram equipment, commodities and supplies.
C. Participate in selection of educational materials for distribution to patients, referring physicians, etc.
D. Make recommendations regarding ultrasound patient care as relates to sonography and education.
E. Assist with physician reporting of sonogram reports.

80% of time
Clinical Patient Care Duties
A. Conduct standard and advanced sonographic exams on Ob/Gyn patients, both in assistance to physician and independently.
B. Conduct advanced ultrasounds on high-risk Maternal Fetal Medicine patients.
C. Prepares patients for ultrasound examination/procedure including the paperwork. This involves using the EHR to appropriately gather pertinent information.
Assist attending physician in the performance of obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound guided procedures and examinations to include:
1. Amniocentesis
2. Amnio infusion/reduction
3. Doppler studies
4. Saline sonohysterogram
5. Embryo transfer
6. Other procedures requiring sonogram guidance.
E. Staffs various ultrasound satellite sites based on clinic needs.
F. Works varied hours based on clinic needs.
G. Completes the sonographer's portion of the imaging report with accurate information, including CPT codes for billing purposes.
H. Makes recommendations regarding ultrasound patient care as relates to sonography and education.
I. Assists with chart prep for the ultrasound and maternal fetal medicine clinic.
J. Faxes MFM consultation and ultrasound reports to referring providers.
K. Assists with cleaning of ultrasound equipment and exam rooms.
L. Assists with stocking MFM/ultrasound supplies in exam rooms.

10% of time
Academic/Teaching Responsibilities
A. Provides education in sonographic theory and techniques to ultrasound interns, medical students and residents.
B. Participates in evaluation of medical students and residents.

5% of time
Research
A. Assist in collecting data and developing research projects appropriate to field.
B. Assist in implementation and collection of data for faculty-initiated research.
 Qualifications
1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Current/valid registration, certification or licensure in Medical Sonography, accreditation in sonography by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS); AND
3.Two (2) years (24 months) of progressively more responsible work experience in the designated area of specialty; AND
4. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

*Note: A Bachelor's degree in a health care related field may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of experience.

Condition of Employment:  Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, an out-of-state resident who is hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
