Overview

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

The Buildings Systems Group is seeking an experienced Lighting and Building Energy Research Engineer III to conduct research and provide technical support in lighting and radiometric systems performance evaluation, technology testing and demonstration, and deployment with a special focus on germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) systems for air disinfection. The successful candidate will use their technical expertise in lighting, radiometry, and data analysis skills to test and evaluate GUV system performance in both laboratory and field settings. The candidate will use the information learned from research to identify additional research needs and develop resources in support of technology deployment. These may include fact sheets, how-to guides, industry articles and publications, development of industry standards, and tools. Other technologies that improve air quality, reduce airborne disease transmission, and/or support building decarbonization may also be evaluated.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

+ Apply science and engineering skills to lead the development of technical approaches addressing GUV and indoor air quality research challenges.

+ Lead the development of technical products, such as technical reports and journal articles, and present at conferences and technical forums.

+ Manage moderate sized projects and/or project tasks.

+ Provide leadership to teams with multi-disciplinary staff from across the laboratory to share resources and optimize approaches.

+ Provide leadership for the generation of ideas for new proposals and participate in/lead business development activities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

+ BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience OR

+ MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience OR

+ PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Must have experience with photometric or radiometric testing, measurement, and/or associated equipment

+ Must have strong attention to detail and analytical skills

+ Graduate degree in mechanical engineering, buildings sciences, electrical engineering, civil engineering, architectural engineering, or related field

+ Experience using lighting simulation tools (e.g., AGi32, Visual Lighting, Photopia, Radiance) to conduct simulations of lighting and/or GUV system performance

+ Experience designing experimental studies, developing test plans, and implementing field evaluations

+ Basic programming skills for data analysis (e.g. Python, R)

+ Track record of using a collaborative approach to problem-solving and the ability to work well with geographically distributed and interdisciplinary teams

+ Experience interacting and communicating effectively with clients

+ Demonstrated ability to write concisely and clearly

+ Passion for learning and innovation to advance building systems energy efficiency

+ Willingness to travel domestically for laboratory and field work

+ Ability and willingness to effectively present research findings at conferences
