Position: Nurse Intern (Nursing Student - Patient Care Technician PD)
Location: Chicago
Full Time: Student will commit to full-time Nurse Intern Program Schedule of 8 weeks. Program runs from 6/10/2024 - 8/9/2024. Interns will not work the week of July 1st.
Hours: Monday-Friday; possible weekend coverage; Commitment is 32 hours per week; day or pm shift.
Three (eight-hour) or two (12-hour) days per week will be scheduled in the role of a nursing assistant on the home unit, working under the direction of an assigned staff nurse.
One (eight-hour) day per week will be provided to "shadow" a nurse on a specialty unit. Shadow days as a nurse intern provides the opportunity to "follow" a staff RN, observe patient populations in the specialty, and perform skills under the RN's direct supervision.
Nurse Interns may be scheduled for either the day or pm shift and may rotate at the end of the first 4 weeks. Scheduled nurse interns are not part of the unit staffing grid.
Nurse Interns hired for the Summer Program may opt into the Year-Round Program. If the Nurse Intern does not chose to continue, employment will terminate after the eight-week commitment.

What you will need:
High school graduate or equivalent
Current enrollment in an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing program
Current certification on IDPH's health care worker registry
BLS through the American Heart Association
Completed at least one clinical rotation
Have and maintain a 3.0 GPA or above during the Academic Year preferred
Provide one letter of recommendation from their professor
Ability to interact and communicate effectively with others
Ability to effectively handle confidential information, stress, and organize time and tasks

General Summary:
Nursing students function in the role of nurse intern by performing tasks related to the functioning of the nursing unit and the provision of patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse. In addition, performs selected patient care tasks, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, while learning the role, skills, and responsibilities of a Registered Nurse.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions

Performs selected patient care tasks under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
Nurse Interns working in specialty areas possess a knowledge of policies/procedures specific to that patient population including age specific needs (e.g. Nurse Intern working with pediatric patients would receive credentialing regarding the needs of children and adolescents). Each unit is responsible for providing specific credentialing.

ACCESS TO PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION

Computer system access for the Nursing Division is assigned based on criteria as specified in Policy # 08-113-0, and on the minimum necessary as described in this job description. Approval for level of access is given by the system administrator (for Nursing Division this is Nursing Informatics) or the department that has ownership of system/module. See computer system Access Control policy.
