Job Description

If selected, City residency must be established within one year of hire (or within the timeframe outlined in bargaining unit contract, if applicable). Residency must be maintained for the duration of employment. Applicants need not be current residents of the City of Peoria to be considered.
After an offer of employment but prior to hire, all applicants must complete a medical examination including a drug screen.
All new hires will be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

 Description

EMPLOYEE'S MUST RESIDE WITHIN THE CITY OF PEORIA
DEPARTMENT: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
LOCATION:City Hall, 419 Fulton Street, Room 300, Peoria, Illinois
HOURS: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. - Monday through Friday

The Building Inspector position performs inspections to promote public safety and ensure substantial compliance with codes governing residential and commercial building construction, including, but not limited to, building codes, electrical codes, mechanical codes, and energy codes. The Building Inspector reviews plans and provides inspections of buildings in the course of construction, alterations, or repairs to determine if plans, workmanship, and materials conform to all existing code requirements. The Community Development Department is looking for a candidate that is a quick learner, hard worker, and someone who is able to provide exceptional customer service. An ideal candidate would have experience in the trades and be familiar with the International Code Council code series. Candidates with previous experience in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC work or other construction trade are encouraged to apply.

 Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

Inspects commercial and residential buildings and structures in the course of construction, alteration and repair for compliance with the City's building codes and referenced standards to obtain conformance with adopted codes.
Reviews submitted building and site plans prior to issuance of building and/or trade permits.
Communicates with permit applicants, architects, engineers, contractors, etc., in making corrections to ensure substantial compliance with adopted codes.
Assists in permit writing process as required.
Issues Notices of Dangerous Buildings or an Unsafe Order when required.
Initiates condemnation and demolition procedures when required for dangerous and unsafe buildings or structures.
Conducts inspections to assist other departments such as Fire, Police, Housing, and Public Works as needed.
Issues stop work orders, violation notices and penalty tickets for violation of city codes.
Answers inquiries from public regarding building codes and related items.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Engineering, Construction, or a related field; and four to five years of progressively responsible related experience. A combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
