Duties and Responsibilities 
 The Allen Lab in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Loyola University Chicago is seeking a research associate with a background in biology or chemistry. Our group is focused on understanding antagonistic behaviors between bacteria in the hope of developing new therapeutics to treat infections or optimize probiotic strains. Specifically, we employ a cross-disciplinary approach to investigate particular aspects of toxin production in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The research associate will primarily conduct biological assays to elucidate biological and biochemical properties of such toxins. A successful applicant will also communicate scientific results in weekly meetings, oversee and participate in lab operations, and mentor/train students.

 

 

 

A qualified applicant will have the ability to:

 


- Communicate clearly with the principal investigator (PI).

 


- Carry out experiments as instructed by the PI.

 


- Follow verbal and written instructions and established procedures.

 


- Maintain accuracy and consistency.

 


- Analyze and interpret data from experiments.

 


- Balance multiple ongoing experiments.

 


- Finish tasks in a timely manner.

 


- Work as an effective team member, dealing calmly and courteously with people and with excellent verbal communication skills.

 


- Maintain a safe and orderly lab environment. Ensures compliance with safety regulations.

 


- May assist in ordering lab supplies when required. Maintains orderly records of purchases.

 


- Train students and other staff in research protocols and lab rules.

 


- Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience 
 Minimum Education: Required: Bachelors Degree Preferred: Masters Degree Specify Degree(s): Biological or physical sciences Minimum Experience: Required: 1-2 years of previous job-related experience Preferred: 3-5 years of previous job-related experience

Education Required: Bachelor's Degree. Preferred: Master's Degree.

Experience Required: 1-2 years of previous research experience in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a relevant field .
