This is a hybrid-based opportunity. It often requires coming to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois or other Loyola Medicine locations on short notice.

The Communications Specialist executes media relations and internal communications for the health system. Responds to media inquiries, schedules interviews, arranges and plans media events and visits, and serves as a staff writer and editor. Writes press releases and proactively pitches news stories to various media and provides follow-up. Performs other duties as needed in the Marketing Department to promote the health system including assisting with events as needed. Serves in editing and/or writing capacity for various publications produced by the Marketing Department. Produces weekly newsletters and internal communication materials for the health system and follows set guidelines for approval on all written communication. Assists other departments with communications projects. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Working with the manager, initiates and controls the flow of public information and access to the media and other external audiences. This involves research, interviewing, writing, editing, speech writing and/or interaction with all types of media, local, regional, and trade industry press as required. Notifies the Manager of all media inquiries and seeks counsel on actions to be taken. Initiates contacts with media representatives to maintain a working relationship; initiates story ideas or campaigns to sell to the media and responds to requests from the media. Tracks and follows all inquiries and the result of media interaction with our staff. Plans seasonal or periodic campaigns for stories. Helps plan and manage media and community relations events. Exercises judgment in responding to media inquiries with special attention to timeliness, appropriateness and accuracy of response. Submits monthly reports with number of media contacts, press releases, placements and value of coverage. Serves as the liaison between patients, physicians and staff and members of the media, always securing mandatory consent. Maintains a variety of internal contacts as sources for media stories.

Education :

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or English 3-5 years of communications experience in health care, medical, science or pharma industries. Must demonstrate creativity, strong writing, editing, grammar and proofreading skills and provide well-crafted writing samples. Proficient in AP style.
