Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.
The Accounting Department is charged with the accurate and timely processing of transactions and production of financial Statements. The group is divided into five sections: Accounting, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll and Revenue Accounting.
Reporting to the Manager, Payroll, the Position Control Specialist will be responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely allocation, tracking, and maintenance of budgeted positions in Metra's payroll and related systems.
Primary duties include Review position control reports to ensure each employee is assigned a valid and unique position number and position numbers are accurately entered into the payroll system. Confer with the Budget Department and Human Resources to verify position availability. Work with operating departments to make corrections and reconcile discrepancies before the close of each pay period. Audit reports for variances or errors in union positions, work with departments to resolve, and update and maintain position numbers. Collaborate with Timekeepers to ensure timely processing of new positions in KRONOS. Facilitate position control process improvements to increase operational efficiency and resolve issues. Review historical reports for duplicate position numbers; maintain position functions; and develop, calculate, and maintain position control tables.
Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.
Must possess an Associates degree in Business Administration, Information Technology, Accounting, OR in lieu of specified degree experience may be substituted that equals two (2) years in position control, accounting, payroll, or related experience.
In addition to #1, must have three (3) years of position control, accounting, payroll, or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have experience working in a union environment with an understanding of seniority and how seniority impacts job bidding/bumping/placement.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of position control management.
Good knowledge of payroll systems and procedures.
Good knowledge of data auditing techniques.
Good analytical and organizational skills.
Good customer service and interpersonal skills.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Good auditing and proofreading skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel. Access preferred.
Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

Ability to successfully perform independent analysis and generate concise conclusions.
