Overview
Northern Illinois University (NIU) School of Music seeks a full-time, Visiting Assistant Professor of Trumpet to teach applied trumpet, chamber music, supervise a graduate assistant and serve as coordinator of the Brass Area starting August 15, 2024. Pending university funding, the School of Music plans to search for a tenure track Full Time trumpet position starting in fall 2025.


The School of Music is a vibrant facet of the NIU campus that prides itself on strong support of first-generation undergraduate students, providing readily available resources for faculty-directed study and research opportunities. The distinguished faculty are Fulbright Scholars, Grammy Award Winners, Chamber Music America and MacArthur Foundation Grants recipients, residents at Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, guest conductors at Avery Fisher Hall, and commercial recording artists who perform regularly at significant international and national venues. The NIU Graduate Jazz Studies Program was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the ten best in the nation. The NIU Jazz Orchestra completed in the 2023 Jack Rudin Competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Position Summary
The Visiting Assistant Professor will teach applied lesson in trumpet, coach brass chamber music, recruit trumpet students, oversee MUED 171 and coordinate the Brass Area.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teach the following courses:
MUSP 125, 225, 325, 625 and 725 Applied Trumpet
MUSC 399 Senior Recital, MUSC 699 Final Recital
MUSC 797 Performer's Certificate Recital
MUSP 317/617 Brass Ensemble.

Supervise the Brass GA for MUED 171 Instrument Techniques and Materials: Brass
Serve as Coordinator the brass area.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Master's degree in music with professional experience, outstanding studio teaching and trumpet performance skills and a record of creative collaboration with diverse colleagues and students.
Additional Requirements
Demonstrate and document a commitment to student success, particularly for first-generation and traditionally under-represented groups.
Preferred Qualifications
Terminal degree or equivalent professional achievement, experience teaching trumpet and other relevant curriculum at the collegiate level, evidence of successfully recruiting music majors and the ability to lead the brass area.
