Job Summary

Assists group leaders engaged in operating cranes, or other hoisting machines used to lift and move materials such as structural steel, plates, and scrap metal by performing the following duties.

Job Responsibilities

Couples and uncouples railroad cars by releasing the air and taking the pressure off by means of small handles, requiring minimal effort, and releasing pin backup inside next to the coupling with a lever. Throws railroad track switches by grasping the handle of the switch and stooping and twisting the torso to walk the switch over. Force required is a torque of 10 to 40 foot/lbs

Loads and unloads rail cars of steel shapes by walking along flatbed rail cars to cut banding. The cutters used are 14 cutters with 4 hand span or 24 cutters with 4-1/2 to 4-4/5 hand span. The larger size weighs 5-5/7 pounds. Hand grip strength within normal limits for workers age and gender is approximately 24 pulling up body weight is necessary. Climbing on steel inside the rail car is required. The steel is not moved manually

Loads and unloads trucks of steel shapes by climbing onto the truck beds to affix hooks or clamps to steel to load. Reaching, stooping, and kneeling, and crouching may be required

Affix hook, bucket, or electromagnet to crane, or affixes rope, cable, chain, sling, or other grappling equipment or attachments to object being lifted or to lifting mechanism. Beam clamps weighing various weights from 14-1/2 pounds to 31 pounds with a cable and hooks weighing up to 71.2 pounds with 21.6 pounds cable are handled. Lifting of these devices is required. Stooping, reaching, kneeling, and crouching may be required
