Position:Patient Care Technician Resource Team
Location:Evanston Hospital
Full Time/Part Time:Pre Diem
Hours: Days, Evening, nights available, weekend rotation; must be able to work 48 hours per 6 week schedule
Required Travel:Evanston and Skokie Hospitals

A Brief Overview:
The Patient Care Technician's (PCT) works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) to deliver direct patient care, assists with the implementation of the patient specific plan of care and other activities which are essential to unit functioning. The PCT will provide a level of care to patients / families as defined and demonstrated by:
Minimal need for direction for routine care,
Competency in unit and departmental skills,
Appropriate age-specific care for the patient population on the unit.

What you will do:
Knowledge and application of NorthShore policies and procedures that apply to job and area of responsibility.
Knowledge and demonstration of NorthShore customer service standards.
Knowledge of the federal, state and local laws that apply to job's area of responsibility.
Ongoing growth and development from participation in events such as workshops, in-service programs and departmental meeting.
Provides care based on physical, psychological, educational, and related criteria, appropriate to the age and type of the patients/customer served in their area. (For employees with regular clinical contact with patients)
Infant Care: Safe environment for infants
Child Care (up to age 13): Safe environment, parental involvement, non-threatening and, concrete communications
Adolescent Care (Ages 13-17): Communication skills appropriate to psychosocial development of adolescents
Adult (Ages 18-50): Communication skills appropriate to psychosocial development of adults
Geriatric Care: Skin care, mobility assistance, communication skills for any hearing or visual impairments
Obtains report on patients from RN
Appropriately responds to the immediate needs of the patient
Documents per protocol in the Electronic Medical Record promptly and accurately
Assists in the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients
Activities of Daily Living (ADL), AM and PM care, assisting patients at the appropriate level of dependence.
Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA regulations
Makes and documents hourly or more frequent rounds on patients for safety, comfort, and meeting patients' needs/requests.
Reports promptly to RN any change in patient's condition.
Obtains and documents vital signs and weights according to established unit protocol, MD orders or RN's direction.
Maintains a safe environment using safety measures, e.g. identification bands, two acceptable patient identifiers, side rails, fall precautions, proper monitoring of restraints.
Participates with RN in prioritizing and planning patient care.
Positions, lifts, transfers, and ambulates patients as directed by the RN.
Provides preventative skin care, recognizes developing skin problems, and proactively communicates information to RN.
Collects specimens: Urine (including sterile specimen from indwelling catheter), stool, and sputum.
Observes wound, dressing and IV sites and reports changes, i.e. increased redness, drainage, etc. to RN.
Applies/removes TED hose and SCDs.
Performs blood glucose monitoring via finger stick.
Maintains and reinforces oxygen/respiratory therapy.
Discontinues PRN adaptor.
Applies and removes soft (cloth) restraints as directed by RN.
Administers non-medicated enema.
Provides routine colostomy/ileostomy care.
Utilizes aseptic/sterile technique to provide wound care and dressing application according to plan of care.
Foley catheter insertion/care.
Performs 12-lead EKG according to established protocol.
Places patients on telemetry/programs central monitor as per unit protocol.
Discontinues indwelling urinary catheter.
Orients patient/family to environment as appropriate e.g. call light use, bed controls
Provides patient education regarding valuables and reduction of loss
Prepares appropriate equipment for transfer with patient.
Transports patient to hospital exit as appropriate.
Assists with transfer of patients to internal departments as appropriate.
Insures patient rooms are tidy, organized, removes unnecessary equipment and linen.
Assures that call light is within patient's reach at all times.
Maintains a clean, safe environment; removes clutter and equipment from hallways.
Prepares items for Central Supply pick-up according to procedure.
Cleans blood/body fluid spills with appropriate disinfectant and notifies Environmental services for further cleaning.
Restocks patient rooms with necessary items/equipment.
Follows procedure for linen disposal.
