Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications


Overview
Materials Management/Campus Mail Services has a unique opportunity for someone who enjoys staying busy and interacting with people. The primary job responsibility for this position is delivering mail and packages from the Materials Management warehouse to our campus partners. The right person will be reliable, responsible, deliver exceptional customer service, enjoy people, be willing to learn a variety of assignments and tasks and be able to work independently as well as with other members of the Materials Management team. Applicants must have, and be able to maintain, a valid drivers license.
Position Summary
The individual in this position will learn the appropriate methods and procedures required to process as directed, incoming and outgoing U.S. mail received at Campus Mail Services using available technology and mail processing equipment. Processing includes dumping, sorting, rating, and metering outgoing U.S. mail pieces, and sorting both flats and letter pieces of incoming U.S. mail and interoffice mail for separation by department and delivery route. This individual will also be responsible for delivering mail to all departmental, administrative and academic units. This person must possess a valid Class D driver's license at all times as required by the State of Illinois.

This position shall report to the Mail Services Supervisor or his/her designee, and shall have no direct supervisory responsibilities other than the assigned training of new personnel in the Campus Mail Services department and the periodic training of student or extra-help employees. This position shall receive direction, training and mentoring from other experienced personnel in the department as assigned. This position is administratively responsible to the Director of Campus Services and may be assigned other Materials Management job tasks as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Material Sorting and Delivery
Assist in the receipt, unpacking, storage, sorting and delivery of materials shipped to the university.


Mail Delivery
Deliver materials to and from campus units as assigned.
Deliver university mail, internal and USPS, to and from campus units as assigned.
Drives a university vehicle in the performance of duties as necessary.

Processing General Mail
Process incoming and outgoing mail received at the Campus Mail Services on a continuing basis, including every type and class of mail handled by the U.S. Postal Service directed to, or sent from the university, and all mails originating at NIU for interdepartmental delivery.
The processing of the mail is accomplished by unloading, sorting, weighing, rating, metering, bagging, routing, distributing, and loading; in order to meet the scheduled daily dispatch of outgoing U.S. mails, and the scheduled daily delivery of mail to university departments.

Processing Accountable Mail
Process all accountable mails, including registered, certified, insured, special delivery, express, postage due, and business reply mail in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations.
Identify and process all insufficiently addressed mail through the department's Directory Services so it can be forwarded to the intended recipient or returned to the sender as undeliverable.

Other Related Duties
Perform related, miscellaneous duties as assigned, including, but not limited to the following:
The repairing or re-wrapping of packages unfit for mailing or forwarding as received.
The proper handling, storage, and expediting of all perishable packages received.
