Position Highlights:

Position: Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist
Location: Chicago, IL
Part time, 20 hrs/week
Hours: Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm and rotating weekends/holidays
Required Travel: None

What you will need:
Education: Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technician, Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or Microbiology
Certification: MT, MLS or MLT (ASCP) certification or equivalent is preferred
Experience/Skills: Experience in clinical laboratory preferred. Must have excellent communication skills (verbal, written, computer), independent decision making and organizational skills, and be detail-oriented.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Hospital and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.

Performs routine and stat analysis on whole blood, serum, plasma and other body fluids in Hematology, Urinalysis, and Chemistry as requested by the medical staff.
Reports results of testing in the LIS, to the medical staff and the medical support staff as necessary in accordance with established protocols.
Understands and performs established quality control protocols according to Laboratory Quality Control Guidelines. Monitors for shifts and trends. Notifies supervisor of problems and observations.
Performs maintenance and calibration of assays on instrumentation according to established procedures.
Assists in the training of new personnel in the section as requested
Troubleshoots instrument malfunction and reagent failures and initiates company technical service visits when necessary.
Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures to comply with safety, environmental and infection control standards.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: N/A

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS:
Internal contacts may include any member of the health care delivery team. External contacts would include Health care personnel/professionals, regulating/governmental agency personnel, patient and visitors.
ENVIRONMENT:
Primarybody position: Sitting= 25%, Standing/Walking = 75%, Lifting requirements: lab supplies up to 40 lbs. (10%)
Repetitive tasks: keyboard entry (25%)
Exposure to environmental conditions: hazardous chemicals, blood/body fluids and airborne diseases (100%)
Known risk factors: Hepatitis, HIV exposure
