Job Description

FERMI Research Alliance, LLC has an opening for a Network Administrator in Batavia, Illinois. Position Summary: Provide operation support, upgrades, and further development for Laboratory’s VPN system to support remote access for 2000+ employees, visitors, and contractors. Assist with operation support and development of Laboratory’s DNS, Application Load Balancing and Network management services. Configure, deploy, and maintain IPv4 and IPv6 networks for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), NOvA, G-2, MicroBooNE and other experiments running at Fermilab. Troubleshoot and resolve networking issues on computation and storage servers used by the experiments. Set up and support the IPv6 infrastructure for the Inter-lab R&D SENSE project (Software Defined Networking for End-to-End Networked Science at the Exascale). Troubleshoot and resolve network issues on multiple computing platforms (Windows, MacOS, Linux), assist with installation and configuration of networking software for end users. Configure, install, support, and maintain networks, systems, and network applications of multiple vendors including Cisco Systems, Arista Networks, Schweitzer Engineering and other manufacturers, data center and industrial switches, Internet of Things, and industrial sensors and monitors. In a complex network environment, collect and analyze logs from switches, routers, and firewalls. Collect statistics from monitoring servers to troubleshoot end users’ connectivity or performance issues. Configure the Switch Port Analysis mode on switches and routers running NX-OS or IOS operating software and collect data on a monitoring server for the future network analysis. Set up and manage monitoring and management tools; Install and configure Linux servers; Provide software development, programming, and scripting for networking systems.

Travel required: Travel will include 1 – 2 annual trips to remote locations with networks for physics experiments to perform network administrator’s duties. Occasional travel to conferences and collaboration meetings. Each trip is expected to last a week or less.
