Job Description

 Description

EMPLOYEE'S MUST RESIDE WITHIN THE CITY OF PEORIA.
DEPARTMENT: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
LOCATION: City Hall, 419 Fulton Street, Room 300, Peoria, Illinois
HOURS: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

The entry level position is ideal for a candidate looking to get exposure to local government and, more specifically, the functions of the Community Development Department. The position provides complex administrative support to the Community Development Department and assists on projects and programs related to Neighborhood Development, Grants Management, Code Enforcement, Building Safety, and Planning and Zoning. An ideal candidate would have strong customer service skills, the ability to function in a fast-paced environment and represent the City of Peoria to the general public in a professional manner. Performs a variety of duties in support of the Community Development Department services and functions; aids in the development process in the areas of planning, inspections and economic development; provides customer service to applicants, developers, consultants, the general public, and outside organizations regarding City codes, policies, standards, and processes; processes development applications, building permits and zoning certificates; assists in the Commission process to include agenda creation and minutes and performs related duties as assigned.
 Examples of Duties

(All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)
Receive and review development applications from customers; assess scope of project and relevant requirements; educate customers regarding necessary permits and general code compliance of proposed projects.
Perform technical check of permits and applications to ensure compliance with the Community Development Department standards, development conditions, construction specifications, and city ordinances.
Issues standard zoning certificates by receiving drawings and applications; checks documents for proper completion; verifies presence of required licenses and insurance; enters applications into computer; calculates and collects associated fees; routes drawings and documentation; prints zoning certificates and maintains files.
Issues permits by receiving drawings and applications; checks documents for proper completion; verifies presence of required licenses and insurance; enters applications into computer; calculates and collects associated fees; routes permit drawings and documentation; prints permits and maintains permit files.
Staffs the Development Center to assist citizens and provide information regarding the development process including knowledge of the commission processes and all applicable fees.
Interact with contractors, design professionals, and the general public, courteously and professionally, to assist with general information and guidance through the permitting process.
Answers inquiries and complaints in person and on the phone from developers, architects, contractors, engineers, and the public related to regulations for building construction, remodeling, and repair including structural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and zoning matters.
Conducts and processes transactions relating to Development Projects which includes accounting for and balancing daily receipts.
