Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Reporting to the assigned Clinical Supervisor, performs prescription refills and medication prior authorizations following designated protocols, under the direction of the Physician (MD) and Registered Nursing (RN).

REPRESENTATIVE FUNCTIONS:

Refills routine prescription requests following designated prescription refill protocols from Inbasket messages in appropriate clinical pools.

Practicing good phone etiquette and customer relations, collects and documents patient data and history as needed to safely refill medications

Reviews and updates patient records with current information relevant to medication refills. Confers with physicians on any incomplete refill requests and seeks clarification prior to completing refill requests.

Obtain appropriate authorization from a patient's insurance for medications when needed and completes in a timely fashion

Assists patients with appointment scheduling when required for medication refills per protocol.

Remains alert to potential quality problems and actively participates in process improvement opportunities.

Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to document legibly.

Interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, team members, and physicians and to maintain team-oriented relationships with senior management, managers and staff.

Ability to work efficiently and seek guidance when unclear of assigned tasks. Able to exercise attention to details and display proper judgment related to assigned tasks.

Ability to maintain high customer service standards.

Proficient computer skills and the ability to learn and effectively utilize department specific software systems.

Ability to effectively perform or learn technical skills to perform essential functions within allocated time frame.

Ability to work a flexible schedule as part of a team.

Ability and willingness to float between multiple Physician Office locations when needed.

KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AND LICENSURE/REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

Minimum high school education or equivalent.

Experience as a Medical Assistant or Pharmacy Technician or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
Medical assistant for three years in a medical office with prescription refill/prior authorization for medications experience preferred OR
Pharmacy Technician certification either by a national certification test or an approved program is preferred OR
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for one year in a medical office with prescription refill/prior authorization for medication experience preferred

Current certification as Medical Assistant or Pharmacy Technician or Licensed Practical Nurse
For Medical Assistants: National Medical Assistant certification body or obtains within 3 months of hire or transfer OR
For Pharmacy Technician: Current Pharmacy Technician license in the State of Illinois. Certified Pharmacy Technician with CPhT certification within two (2) years of licensure require, or an active student in an accredited school of Pharmacy, or have maintained active Pharmacy Technician licensure with the state of Illinois since January 1, 2008.
Currently licensed as an LPN

Experience with an EMR preferred.

Current CPR certification required.
