Description
This Center for Clinical Research and Simmons Cancer Institute based position will involve the planning, development, coordination, administration and implementation of emerging research programs at Simmons Cancer institute at SIU School of Medicine. This includes, but is not limited to, participation in the development of high-priority clinical, translational and population-based research programs under the direction of the Executive Director of Simmons Cancer Institute and Hematology / Oncology Division Chief, Aziz Khan, MD.
This position requires a strong understanding of the scientific research process, project management experience, clinical, basic and population science aspects of cancer related research. Collaboration with other members of the basic science faculty, clinical faculty, graduate and medical students will be expected. Participation in independent or collaborative research is expected consistent with expertise and opportunities. Participation in undergraduate and graduate medical education and in graduate student teaching in the basic sciences will also be expected. Additional training and access to continuing education will be provided.
 Examples of Duties

I. TEACHING (10%)
* Educate faculty, fellows and residents about drug discovery and the clinical
development process
* Educate faculty, fellows and residents about clinical trial development and
implementation, project management, and regulatory oversight
II. ADMINISTRATION/RESEARCH (80%)
A. For the Division of Hematology and Oncology
* Serves as a principal research liaison between Simmons Cancer Institute and the Division
of Hematology and Oncology
* Serves as a principal research liaison between Simmons Cancer Institute and various
other oncology research programs, including local NCORP programs
* Serve as a principal research liaison between Simmons Cancer Institute and the Illinois
Cancer Registry / Memorial Medical Center Registry office for the annual reporting of
cancer data to the State of Illinois Cancer Registry
* Assists Simmons Cancer Institute with the overall research program development and
administration
* Assists Simmons Cancer Institute in research strategic planning and implementation
* Contributes unique scientific and research expertise to other faculty research as
appropriate
* Performs experiments as appropriate in collaboration with faculty peers
* Assists faculty in establishing their research projects/programs and identifying other
support as needed
* Assists faculty, fellows and residents with protocol development, manuscript
development, grant development, and other research/scholarly activity as appropriate
* Participates as a faculty mentor/advisor for resident research and scholarly activities
* May supervise researchers/technicians/study coordinators in research activities
* Participates in independent or collaborative research consistent with expertise and
opportunities
* Submit and obtain research grants and publish findings in area of personal research and
expertise.
B. For Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI)
* May serve as Clinical Trial Director, assisting in project development and management
as appropriate
* May serve as staff supervisor for the Clinical Trial Office
* May serve as Director of the SCI Tissue Bank, including acting as chair of the Tissue Bank
Committee
* Participates in SCI staff and specific research project team meetings as appropriate
* Participates in clinical trial and team science projects as needed
* Participates in clinical research training opportunities as appropriate
* Engages in clinical research billing and Medicare coverage analysis

* Participates in the strategic planning process for future SCI Research Programs
* Serves as a resource to faculty seeking key research and industry collaborations
* Assists with the establishment of mission-critical collaborative research opportunities and partnerships in the community and region
* Oversees clinical trial management system and specimen inventory management system
C. For the Center for Clinical Research (CCR)
* Participates in CCR staff and specific research project team meetings as appropriate
* Supports researchers/study coordinators in research activities
* Participates in clinical research training as needed
IV. SERVICE (10%)
* Membership on departmental, medical school, and university committees
* Review of grant applications for local and national funding as appropriate
 Qualifications
1. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
2. A doctoral or medical degree in a relevant field, with accomplishment and qualifications commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor at SIUSOM
